Volunteer at IDA

IDA depends on the generous contribution of time and knowledge of its volunteers to make our programs and events happen. Volunteering is a great way to support IDA, as well as to meet like minded professionals in the filmmaking industry, and gain access to IDA’s informative and sought after programs and events.

Volunteering opportunities include:


Doc U Seminar programs take place monthly and quarterly in these formats:

Doc U evening panels are held monthly--typically the third Monday--in the evening at Cinefamily on Fairfax at Melrose. Volunteers are asked to arrive at 5:30pm. Responsibilities include setting the theater with reserved signs for talent and videographer, setting up seating for panelists and moderator, prepping and assembling handout materials, assisting with check-in and handout distribution, assisting with ticket sales, prepping for post-panel reception, and of course helping clean up and load out.

Doc U day-long programs are typically held quarterly, on a Saturday. Locations are TBD. Responsibilities include helping set up step and repeat, registration table, and set up room for appropriate seating; assisting with registration, distributing handouts, informing attendees on agenda, guiding attendees to where they need to go, helping set up for catering, helping break down and load out after the event.


IDA Documentary Awards is the foremost event dedicated to the art of documentary film. The IDA Awards take place annually in December in Los Angeles. More information at www.documentary.org/awards

Volunteer responsibilities include:

  • Working the registration table to check in guests
  • Ushering guests to their seats
  • Escorting VIPs through the press line, registration, and to their seats
  • Assisting with set up of step and repeat, registration tables, placing linens and decor on catering tables, setting up sponsor lounges
  • Assisting the Stage Manager during run through and tech check
  • Assisting with changeovers during the show
  • Assisting with wrap and load out

Volunteers who work the required number of shifts may attend the awards show and following cocktail reception, and receive one year complimentary Individual Membership to IDA.


DocuDay is IDA's annual all-day, back-to-back screenings of the year's Oscar® nominated documentary films. DocuDay takes place in Los Angeles the Saturday before the Oscars®. More information at www.documentary.org/docuday
Volunteer responsibilities include:
Day before DocuDay:

  • Assisting with ticketing process: sorting all printed tickets into envelopes.
  • Preparing all materials to go to site, including materials for registration table, for Stage Manager in running audience traffic, and for onsite ticket sales.
Day of event:
  • Working registration table, checking in guests and filmmakers
  • Handling credit card (smartphone app) and cash ticket sales
  • Checking in filmmakers
  • Assisting with venue set up: sponsor lounges, step and repeat, green room, event set up.
  • Assisting with wrap and load out

Volunteers who work the required number of hours may see the films, and receive one year complimentary Individual Membership to IDA
