Q&A with directors Michael Tucker and Petra Epperlein
Description from TIFF 2009 catalog by Thom Powers:
A cage fighter in Texas. A congressional candidate in Buffalo. A heavy-metal rocker in Colorado. A hog butcher in North Carolina. Their common thread is that they went through combat together in Iraq in the U.S. Army's 2/3 Field Artillery unit, known as the Gunners. Now they're dispersed back to their hometowns, trying to resume normal lives. In this extraordinary documentary, filmmakers Michael Tucker and Petra Epperlein reveal the poignant and poetic tapestry of America's neglected corners.
Tucker and Epperlein are uniquely qualified for this journey. Their debut feature film, Gunner Palace, which played at the Festival in 2004, was the first theatrical work to follow American soldiers in Iraq. That was followed by The Prisoner or: How I Planned to Kill Tony Blair in 2006, which looked at Abu Ghraib from the rare perspective of a wrongfully accused Iraqi prisoner, and Bulletproof Salesman in 2008, which examined a war profiteer.
How to Fold a Flag begins with a 1920 epigraph from the German author Ernst Jünger: "We were asked to believe that the war was over. We laughed - for we were the war." That sentiment embodies these characters. In Texas, Michael Goss, haunted by the deaths he witnessed, says, "I need to continue fighting something." In Buffalo, Jon Powers campaigns on his war record for the U.S. Congress, which doesn't stop his opponents from "Swift Boating" him with smear tactics. In suburban Colorado, Wilf Stuart tries to uphold his mother Becky's spirits as his brother prepares to deploy for combat. In Fayetteville, North Carolina, Javorn Drummond cracks jokes about his ramshackle home. Describing his sense of dislocation, he says, "We went to war as a unit and came home alone."
How to Fold a Flag checks in on these characters and others throughout the pivotal election year of 2008, capturing unforgettable moments of hope, loss and redemption. They may be young, but they have a lot to teach us.
About the directors:
Michael Tucker was born in Honolulu. He has co-directed the films Gunner Palace (04) and The Prisoner or: How I Planned to Kill Tony Blair (06), which both screened at the Festival, as well as Bulletproof Salesman (08) and How to Fold a Flag (09).
Petra Epperlein was born in Karl Marx Stadt in the former East Germany and studied architecture in Dresden. She has co-directed the films Gunner Palace (04) and The Prisoner or: How I Planned to Kill Tony Blair (06), which both screened at the Festival, as well as Bulletproof Salesman (08) and How to Fold a Flag (09).

Dear readers and writers,
The postmark deadline for the third annual Missouri Review Audio & Video Competition, with its $4,500 in prize money, is Dec. 1. We’ve structured our categories to allow writers of all types and experience levels to participate. Writers may enter the Voice-Only Literature category—all you need is a great manuscript of fiction, poetry, or creative nonfiction, audio software that’s readily available, and a microphone—no need to fuss with music or other sound tracks. And it’s a great way to get recognized, especially since the universe of entrants is significantly less than our annual Jeffrey E. Smith Editors’ Prize contest.
Those more venturesome or experienced with sound may enter the Narrative Essay or Documentary categories. Also, this year, there is a video category. One winner from the video category will be featured at the prestigious True/False film festival in Columbia, Missouri. We also offer a “Best Student Entry” for each category.
Every entrant receives a one-year digital subscription to The Missouri Review. Each entry is $24. For more information and entry form, go to http://missourireview.com/contest/audio_competition.php.
Best wishes,
The editors of The Missouri Review

For the December installment of the Flaherty NYC monthly screening series, The Flaherty will present and discuss recent advocacy videos produced by WITNESS and the grassroots human rights defenders it works with around the world. WITNESS staff will also highlight recent short videos from US-based collaborative production and editing campaigns focused around elder justice in the USA, and legislative action for effective genocide prevention. The program is a perfect complement to the current season of Flaherty NYC, which revolves around the theme of the 2009 Robert Flaherty Film Seminar, "Witnesses, Monuments Ruins."
There will be a post-screening discussion with representatives from WITNESS: Sam Gregory (Program Director), Kelly Matheson (Program Coordinator for North America), and Violeta Krasnic (Program Coordinator for Europe and Central Asia).
Since its founding in 1992, WITNESS has empowered human rights defenders to use video as a tool to shine a light on those most affected by human rights violations, and to transform personal stories of abuse into powerful tools of justice. On the creation of WITNESS, co-founder and musician Peter Gabriel told Paste Magazine, "Time after time, good, written evidence has been ignored by the media or governments. When a WITNESS partner has produced a short and powerful video on the same issue, there is often immediate action."
Films to be Screened:
Hear Us: Zimbabwean Women Affected by Political Violence Speak Out
(Research and Advocacy Unit (RAU) and WITNESS, 2009, 16min, Zimbabwe/USA)
In 2008, political violence erupted throughout Zimbabwe as a result of the contested national elections. Zimbabwean women of all ages, targeted for their political affiliations, were abducted from their workplaces and homes and raped, tortured, and beaten in secret torture centers. Hear Us features four of these women, who have come forward to demand justice from the Zimbabwean government and the Southern African Development Community.
An Age for Justice: Elder Justice Now
(National Council on Aging and WITNESS, 2009,16min, USA)
Imagine if someone you love was beaten, neglected or exploited and you were in a position to help. This film shares powerful stories of the reprehensible abuse endured by our elders in every community across the country and gives us a critical and historic step we can take to protect older Americans. The associated '100 Voices' online campaign at elderjusticenow.org shares personal perspectives from elders across the country on the need for action.
Crying Sun: The Impact of War in the Mountains of Chechnya
(Memorial and WITNESS, 2007, 26min, Chechnya/USA)
Chechnya has been deeply scarred by years of fighting between separatists and Russian federal forces. In the Chechen Mountains, the conflict has forced families from their homes and is gradually destroying the unique culture of these communities. Crying Sun is the story of Zumsoy, a village torn apart by war. The video amplifies voices of the people who are struggling to preserve their identity amidst violence and suffering.
About The 2009 Roberty Flaherty Film Seminar Founded in 1955, the Flaherty Seminar is an annual showcase for nonfiction cinema. This year's program, "Witnesses, Monuments, Ruins," explored the act of bearing witness - to bring memory, experience and history into the present - through an eclectic range of topics and formal approaches. Flaherty NYC will continue to explore this theme on the second Monday of every month at Anthology Film Archives with the screening of a film followed by a discussion with the filmmaker(s) and a guest moderator.
Anthology Film Archives is an international center for the preservation, study and exhibition of film and video, with a special emphasis on alternative, avant-garde, independent productions and the classics. The theater is located in the old Second Avenue Courthouse building in the East Village on the corner of 2nd Avenue and 2nd Street.
About The Robert Flaherty Film Seminar
The Robert Flaherty Film Seminar is named after Robert Flaherty (1884-1951), who is considered by many to be the father of the American documentary. Flaherty's groundbreaking documentary of Eskimo life, Nanook of the North is among the most noted films of the silent era. He was also the creator of such classic poetic films as Moana, Man of Aran, and Louisiana Story. The Seminar began in 1955-before the era of film schools-when Flaherty's widow, Frances, convened a group of filmmakers, critics, curators, musicians, and other film enthusiasts at the Flaherty farm in Vermont. For more than fifty years the Flaherty Seminar has been firmly established as a one-of-a-kind institution that seeks to encourage filmmakers and other artists to explore the potential of the moving image. The films of such directors as Robert Drew, Louis Malle, the Maysles brothers, Mira Nair, Satyajit Ray, and Robert M. Young were shown at the Seminar before they were known generally in the American film community. New cinematic techniques and approaches first presented and debated at the Seminar have routinely made their way into mainstream American film.

The event will take place at Discovery’s HD Theatre in Silver Spring on December 17, 2009. “Knowing what producers and executives are looking for shouldn’t be limited-access information. In keeping with CINE’s mission of promoting filmmakers and their careers, CINE strives to provide educational opportunities that have practical applications for emerging and established film and television professionals”, said Mr. Thoms, who is also the President of CINE’s board of Directors. “CINE is so pleased to be able to facilitate this program, which will provide valuable insight to participants.”

NW Documentary practices, teaches, and shares the art of non-fiction
storytelling. We illuminate important stories that would otherwise be
lost or overlooked, provide experiential learning opportunities, and
generate better understanding, appreciation, and dialog within our
community.
NW Documentary has become a center for documentary storytelling. Since
2003, NW Documentary's programs have reached half a million people.
Our original productions have garnered prestigious awards, and have
been shared in schools, museums, cultural centers, as well as
broadcast. Our workshops have trained more than 200 new storytellers,
creating hundreds of original documentaries, which are shared in
public events and special presentations.
Our newest project is the creation of a Documentary Resource Center
and Lending Library within our organization that will enhance our
community education programs and serve anyone with an interest in
storytelling. To assist in building this Resource Center we're asking
documentary film makers to donate a copy of their work, either in DVD
or VHS format, to the center. We're happy to provide prepaid envelopes
to offset the cost of your gift. In addition, it's tax deductible!
Mail your documentary to the following address:
