One of the longest running shows in Broadway history, A Chorus Line closed after 15 years, winning every award in the industry and earning more than $300 million in North America, as well as the hearts of millions of fans worldwide. Flash forward to 2006 when the revival touched off a firestorm of intrigue once again. Directors James D. Stern and Adam Del Deo delve into the lives of dancers and singers auditioning for that one elusive chance at Broadway fame. "Capturing both the cruelty and the marvelousness of life in the theater," (NY Times) Every Little Step highlights a riveting behind-the-scenes drama as the revival cast is whittled down from thousands, hundreds, and dozens to the final 30 "Singular Sensations." Earning Directing and Audience Awards for International Documentary at Sundance Film Festival, Afghan Star literally unveils the face of hope amidst war and struggle. The first of its kind in a part of the world where even small freedoms are taboo, this American Idol-like television phenomenon gives a voice to those unheard. To trade guns for microphones and burkas for high notes is to believe in the power of music as a political and cultural truce-maker. Director Havana Marking immerses us in the seldom-seen vibrancy of a place known only for the opposite. Through music, conversations, and laughter, cultural barriers come down as the pop star rises. (Afghanistan/UK, 88 min. Unrated)

MoMA presents the seventh annual Premiere Brazil film exhibition, which introduces New York audiences to accomplished, original films by Brazilian filmmakers, from July 16 through August 3, 2009.
Among the highlights are striking documentary films-including a retrospective of master documentarian Eduardo Coutinho-and inspiring films about Brazilian music and musicians, as well as fictional features by established and emerging directors.
Moscou (Moscow). 2009. Brazil. Directed by Eduardo Coutinho.
Continuing his investigation of the thin line between so-called "truth" and fiction,
Eduardo Coutinho turns his attention to drama during rehearsals by the Galpão
Theater Company for Chekov's "The Three Sisters," directed by Enrique Diaz, As
he shoots scenes from the play, Coutinho shares the magic of an unfolding
mystery. His ubiquitous camera tries to capture the very moment in which reality
becomes fiction and vice-versa, either through the actors' bodies or words or in
backstage scenes of a performance that will exist only on film and not on stage.
80 min. World Premiere. Introduced by Eduardo Coutinho.
Pocket Full of Soul will be shown as a "sneak peek" in Los Angeles as part of 7 Dudley Cinema.
For those of you that do not know, Pocket Full of Soul is a comprehensive documentary which explores the mythos surrounding the harmonica and the unique relationships forged between the instrument and its players. Filmmaker Marc Lempert (in person) delivers an unvarnished and exciting look at the harmonica's rich subculture, it's versatility across music genres, and its subsequent ubiquity. Get up close and personal with the famous, infamous, and totally unknown players as a universal tale of passion, creativity, and musical celebration unfolds. Featuring interviews with John Popper (of Blue Traveler), James Cotton, Magic Dick (of J. Geils Band), Robert Klein, Peter Madcat Ruth, Lee Oskar (of WAR) and many more. Narrated by Huey Lewis.
Pocket Full of Soul starts at 8:30pm, but come early and see Mike Sakamoto's film Rollingman, in which Sakamoto combines harsh black and white images to portray the dead-end existence of a man living alone in a shabby house."Besides being funny and even a little touching, Rollingman offers a vision of "a way out" that transforms the human condition without attempting to transcend it."-Bill Krohn, Senses ofCinema.
Also, there will be a pre-show at 6pm with live music and rare blues films.
