The Grierson Trust is calling for entries for the Grierson 2012 British Documentary Awards.

The Griersons will be presented in the fall and later broadcast on Sky Arts HD.

Award categories are: best documentary on a contemporary theme—domestic; best documetatry on a contemporary theme—international; best documentary on the arts; best historical documentary, best science documentary; best newcomer documentary, which carries a cash prize of £3,000 (US $4,800); and best student documentary.

All categories are open to documentaries made anywhere in the world, with the stipulation that they first had a UK screening during the qualifying period of May 1, 2011 to April 30, 2012.

Previous winners include Nick Broomfield, Kim Longinotto, Paul Watson, Angus Macqueen and Pawel Pawlikowski.

The Public Media Content Fund (PMCF) is an open invitation to independent producers to submit proposals for a program, limited series or short web-based digital video projects (no longer than 20 minutes) on any subject that relates to or is representative of Latino Americans that is appropriate for public television and/or one of its platforms.

Programs should bring new audiences to public media and have national relevance presenting a range of subjects, issues and viewpoints that complement and challenge existing public media offerings. These programs should also aim to meet the current content priorities of PBS that include but are not limited to: Performing Arts and Drama, History, Science, News and Public Affairs.

We are currently interested in projects that will help support PBS content goals in offering viewers, from all walks of life, programs that provide opportunities to explore new ideas and new worlds and broaden personal horizons. These projects should provide strong story-telling techniques that give voice to those not normally heard or seen. While proposals can take creative risks, selected projects must ultimately appeal to a wide variety of television and public media audiences. Projects that reflect personal or individual experience should have universal appeal.

The CFC Worldwide Short Film Festival (WSFF) is the premier venue for the exhibition and promotion of short film in North America. LEF New England launched the Moving Image Fund (MIF) in 2002 to support independent film and video artists creating new work. In its transition from a broader to a more defined funding strategy, LEF is currently focusing MIF support on documentary filmmaking. Through MIF, LEF provides funding across all phases of production, supporting films from the early risk-taking stage, through a film’s completion. In this way, MIF offers a continuum of support for selected projects, while also identifying new talent.

LEF invests in documentary film and video projects that demonstrate excellence in technique, originality of vision and voice, and creativity in form. The strongest proposals will be those that clearly articulate the ways in which the proposed project embodies the program’s funding criteria.

• Resonance and power of the film’s core idea or story
• Feasibility of production

For production and post-production projects, priority will be given to those projects that have received previous LEF funding.

Founded in 1977, the San Francisco International LGBT Film Festival is the longest-running, largest and most widely recognized LGBT film exhibition event in the world. As a community event with an annual attendance of 60,000, the Festival is the most prominent and well-attended LGBT arts program in the Bay Area. Frameline also presents year-round exhibitions, including Frameline at The Center, a free film series highlighting diverse, socially relevant works. Year-round programs also include members-only sneak previews and special events, as well as special screenings and events featuring directors, actors and other queer media icons.

The American Museum of Natural History's Margaret Mead Film Festival is presented by the Museum's Public Programs Division in the Department of Education. Held annually each fall, the Mead Festival was founded in honor of pioneering anthropologist Margaret Mead, one of the first anthropologists to recognize the significance of film for fieldwork. The Mead Festival screens documentaries, experimental films, animation, and hybrid works that increase our understanding of the complexity and diversity of the peoples and cultures that populate our planet.

In 2010, the Margaret Mead Film Festival implemented the Margaret Mead Filmmaker Award. The Award recognizes documentary filmmakers who embody the spirit, energy, and innovation demonstrated by Margaret Mead in her research, fieldwork, films, and writings. The award is given to a filmmaker whose feature documentary offers a new perspective on a culture or community remote from the majority of our audiences' experience as well as displays artistic excellence and originality in storytelling technique. Films selected for the Margaret Mead Film Festival that are U.S., North American, or World Premieres are eligible for the Award. The award winner is selected by a jury of industry professionals. The 2011 jury was comprised of Darren Aronofsky (director), Liz Garbus (documentarian), Karen Cooper (director of Film Forum, NY), and Stanley Nelson (documentarian). This award has a cash prize.

The 20th Century will be remembered for giving us the documentary form, the civil rights movements, and the Internet, as well as weapons of mass destruction and global warming. Already the 21st Century has brought us the war on terror, a shifting global economy, and a surge of activism and protest around the world. Filmmakers, in particular, are charged with the task of documenting these significant events, shedding light on urgent issues, and creating a record for future generations.

Programmed by Josetxo Cerdán "Open Wounds" will look at changing perspectives on politics, the economy, technology, culture, and ethics over the past Century, and explore how filmmakers contribute to new ways of seeing the world based on their own heritage. Curated by IFP MN and the Walker Art Center, MNTV showcases the finest films and videos produced in the state over the past two years. The showcase is a series of three one-hour broadcasts on TPT, featuring short films by Minnesota filmmakers of all levels of filmmaking experience. Submit your films now! There is no cost to apply!

If your film is selected, it will be broadcast on Twin Cities Public Television (TPT-TV) and streamed online; it will be installed in the Best Buy Film/Video Bay at the Walker Art Center; and you’ll be paid $500 in licensing fees.

The series will be broadcast in December 2012.

Works must have a running time of no longer than 30 minutes. There is no minimum length. You must have completed the work after January 1, 2010. You must have resided in the state of Minnesota at the time the submitted work was produced. If you are a full-time student at the time of the submission deadline, you are not eligible to apply. Current employees of IFP MN, Walker Art Center, and TPT are ineligible to apply. A licensing fee of $500 for limited television broadcast will be paid to the winning filmmakers.

The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) is proud to announce the film retrospective series "Lourdes Portillo: La Cineasta Inquisitiva" taking place June 22 - 30 in New York City. For over 30 years, Lourdes Portillo's award-wining films have explored Latin American, Mexican, and Chicano experiences and social-justice issues. In her signature hybrid style, she has produced and directed over a dozen works as a visual artist, investigative journalist, and activist.

After the Earthquake, her first film, made with Nina Serrano In 1979, is a narrative short about the experiences of a young Nicaraguan woman immigrant to the United States. This was followed by Las Madres: The Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo (1985), an Academy Award–nominated documentary about the courageous Argentinean mothers’ movement that spoke out for that country's desaparecidos. La Ofrenda (1989) brings to vivid life the Day of the Dead ceremony celebrated in Mexico, and its revival by Chicanos in the U.S. Her dedication, insights, and courage in exploring Chicano and Latino identity on film continues to the present with her most recent film, Al Mas Alla, about drug trafficking on the Mexican coastline.

Portillo will be in attendance for the opening four days of the retrospective, including on Friday, June 22, for the New York premiere of Al Más Allá. She will also participate in a discussion with filmmaker and Sundance award-winner Natalia Almada after the screening of The Devil Never Sleeps on Saturday, June 23.

This truly intensive workshop is for people prepared to eat, sleep and breathe documentary for a solid two-week period, absorbing the production process whilst making your own documentary film. Documentary Campus (Germany), the European Documentary Network (Denmark) and DMZ Docs (South Korea) are calling for project submissions to the international training initiative Crossing Borders. Applications are to be submitted by June 25, 2012.

Crossing Borders - The Eurasia-Pacific Documentary Training is an international training programme launched in 2010 by Documentary Campus and the EDN. It brings together filmmakers and documentary experts from both Europe and Asia, who are highly motivated to collaborate with each other across national borders, and have the ambition to enter each other’s markets both artistically and financially. In line with its name Crossing Borders travels between countries in the Asia-Pacific region – in 2010 it took place in China, in 2011 in Malaysia and for 2012 the host country is South Korea.

15 producer / director teams present and work in depth with their documentaries at a 6-day workshop before pitching their projects to a panel of international commissioners. Through one-to-one access to recognized professionals and trainers from around the world, the programme offers creative and practical support for targeting a project for the international market. The aim is to create an invaluable network between Europe and Asia and to furnish the Crossing Borders participants with the necessary knowledge and contacts for their future work on an international level.

In Walk Away Renee, director Jonathan Caouette, IDA's Jacqueline Donnet Emerging Documentary Filmmaker Award winner in 2004, embarks on a road trip to move his mentally ill mother Renee across the country. As they encounter roadblocks in the present, we begin to flash back to moments from the past, giving us insight into this anything-but-ordinary mother/son relationship. Through musical montage, psychedelic sequences and real and imagined circumstance, the film raises questions about love, sacrifice, and the reality in which we live.

The follow-up to Caouette's 2004 film Tarnation, Walk Away Renee makes its North American premiere June 27 on SundanceNOW's Doc Club.

Bridging Cultures films will spark Americans’ engagement with the wider world through the exploration of countries and cultures outside of the United States, and/or across nations.

Films might take a wide range of approaches to international and transnational topics:

• an examination of a critical issue in ethics, religion, or history, viewed through an international lens;
• an approach to a topic or subject that transcends the idea of traditional nation statehood and explores it across borders;
• a biography of a foreign leader, writer, artist, or historical figure; or
• an exploration of the history and culture(s) of a specific region, country, or community outside of the United States.

Projects must be analytical and deeply grounded in humanities scholarship. We encourage innovative nonfiction storytelling and creative formats that will reach broad audiences. Films must range in length from a stand-alone broadcast hour to a feature-length documentary.

Applicants should demonstrate international collaboration by enlisting U.S.-based and non-U.S.-based scholars and/or by working with an international media team.

Two levels of support are available: Development (up to $75,000) and Production (up to $800,000).

Who is eligible? Any U.S. nonprofit organization with IRS 501(c)(3) tax exempt status is eligible. Grants are not awarded to individuals. Independent producers who wish to apply are advised to partner with an eligible organization, which can act as fiscal sponsor.

Presented in partnership between The Film Society of Lincoln Center and Subway Cinema with programming support from Japan Society, The New York Asian Film Festival will showcase over 50 feature films and 3 programs of short films from Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, USA and Vietnam. 2012 NYAFF will feature 20 films making their North American premieres and 1 more making its US debut.

Pang Ho-cheung’s Vulgaria will make it’s North American Premiere as the Opening Night Presentation. Chapman To plays a hapless movie producer trying to get his skin flick off the ground, and he’ll do anything to finance it, including auctioning off visitation rights to the daughter he adores, sucking up to gangsters named Brother Tyrannosaurus, and making not-so-sweet love to a mule. Hilariously offensive, The Hollywood Reporter calls it “laugh-out-loud” and “aptly titled.” Pang Ho-cheung will be at the screening.

Twenty films will make their North American premieres at NYAFF 2011. POV is seeking documentary filmmakers with a digital vision and with projects at any stage of production.

POV is also seeking developers and designers interested in innovating with social-issue-driven media who have expertise with a web platform or library.

POV's Hackathon is inspired by the "hack days" of the open-source development community and companies such as Facebook and Google. In a traditional hackathon, software coders collaborate outside of the usual corporate constraints in compressed time frames (usually fueled by pizza and energy drinks) to solve a problem.

With POV's Hackathon, we're adding independent producers into the mix, adding their creativity and expertise in social-issue storytelling. POV will pair five filmmakers with developers based on their Hackathon applications.

Once matched, the teams will participate in a pre-Hackathon orientation session to prepare media (video, photos, data...) and make decisions about software and tools. Then, over two days, the teams will work together to produce a working prototype.

Note: The hackathon weekend will take place from Saturday morning (August 11, 2012) to Sunday evening (August 12, 2012) in Brooklyn, New York. Before applying, please consider that POV will not be paying for travel, accommodations or expenses.

Dance Camera West (DCW), recognized internationally for its annual presentation and celebration of dance on screen, announces its 11th annual Dance Camera West Dance Media Film Festival.  This year's festival takes place at LACMA and The Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, from Thursday, June 28 to Saturday, June 30, 2012. 

The June 29th program at LACMA features a tribute to Soul Train with a screening of the 90-minute documentary Soul Train: The Hippest Trip In America by J. Kevin Swain followed by interviews with original Soul Train dancers including Jody Watley, Damita Jo Freeman, Nieci Payne and Lula Washington. Hosted by Elvis Mitchell.

Chicken & Egg Pictures’ 2012 Open Call is open to all topics within the Chicken & Egg mandate.

The Mother Wit Human Rights Fund is dedicated to supporting women filmmakers and courageous human rights activists—be they men, women or youth—who together from both sides of the camera take on critical human rights struggles in the global south and the U.S. These films are meant to inspire, enrage and catalyze collective the belief and will needed to insure civil rights, reproductive health rights, environmental, racial and economic justice, education and literacy for all—and especially women and girls. The films must lead with a story and help expand and extend the definition of human rights to mean all the basic rights needed to THRIVE—live, work, play, eat, learn and love—in peace.

Chicken and Egg Pictures strives to support women filmmakers who are taking on challenging, time-sensitive and serious environmental-justice issues (Land of Opportunity) who have a clear passion for translating the science, data and impact of past and current "crises" (Atomic Epilogue, Uranium Drive-In) into compelling, human and visual stories. We are interested in out-of-the-box story-telling skills and a commitment to community engagement. We also appreciate a good sense of "humor."

Founded in 1998, the Montreal International Documentary Festival (Rencontres internationales du documentaire de Montréal - RIDM) presents a selection of the year's best documentaries from Canada and around the world for general and professional audiences. Documentary film has a unique place in Quebec culture. The historic backbone of Quebec cinema, the documentary sector produced a large number of major filmmakers who embraced a demanding, innovative vision of reality-based cinema, and their influence is still being felt. Above all, RIDM's mission is to carry on the vision of those pioneering filmmakers by promoting the best local productions and presenting the year's most important and ambitious international works.

Following the success of its twelve editions, MEDIMED will present again an exclusive selection of documentary projects, and ready made programmes, aiming to enhance the professional and creative exchange between the 12 MEDA countries and the 27 EU countries, encouraging the development, promotion and distribution of European and Mediterranean audio-visual works.

This small-scale market is intended to improve on the promotion and development of new European and Mediterranean independent production of DOCUMENTARIES and the networking of audio-visual professionals and operators. MEDIMED has become a special-interest market which supports the promotion of Euro-Mediterranean audio-visual productions involving private and public television networks together with independent producers with the objective of European transnational co-operation.

In the 12th edition of MEDIMED (7-9 October 2011), 25 documentary projects from 13 countries and 450 + documentary programmes were presented to a select group of broadcasters and distributors. All producers of selected projects were available for pitching, presentation and networking discussions.

Due to the satisfactory results of the previous editions, this year, we propose again both projects and ready made product to be presented to a selected group of professionals, buyers, editors and financiers alike. The exchange between the Mediterranean and European professionals ideally should be a two-way traffic: Mediterranean projects and productions are presented to non-Mediterranean professionals [these will include extra-European delegates], and European ones hopefully will find their way into the Mediterranean [these will include South Mediterranean TV acquisition executives] while they are also presented to all delegates.

The 13th edition will offer a complete roster of networking opportunities, industry conference sessions and market events and services, coupled with the finest in contemporary documentaries from the EU and the Southern Mediterranean countries.

The Industry Conference Sessions will explore some of the issues and concerns facing the present and future of documentary and factual producers, sharing a wealth of insight and expertise while gauging the pulse of the industry. This dynamic panels and discussions will provide essential ground rules for emerging and mid-career doc-makers.

Special attention will be given to new formats of documentary production. The use of TIC technologies and mobile phones is changing some traditional ways of filming. An informative session will be dedicated to mobile content and new technologies focused on documentary proposals.

EU programs from countries with a low documentary production capacity will benefit from a new focus on them.

The VI Ahmed Attia's Award for the Dialogue of Cultures will be given to one of the documentaries entered this year in the dedicated section "MEDIMED Ready Made Projects" which shows new productions pitched in previous editions of the forum.

Courtesy of APIMED, the winner will receive a 1.000,00 Euros cash prize, awarded to the producer of the best documentary pitched at MEDIMED.

Jihlava International Documentary Film Festival is the largest festival of creative documentary films in Central and Eastern Europe. It draws attention to documentaries with innovative visual style and a deeper social reflection and confrontation. Jihlava IDFF has a prominent place on the map of documentary film festivals, being also a member and co-founder of Doc Alliance, initiative of six key European documentary film festivals, the activities of which also include selective documentary and experimental video-on-demand portal www.dafilms.com.

Every year the festival program awards the best international documentaries (Opus Bonum), the most remarkable Central and Eastern European documentaries (Between the Seas), the best Czech documentaries (Czech Joy) and the best of the experimental documentary films (Fascinations). A different perspective, both in terms of cinematographic approach and thinking about the world is reflected in retrospective sections Translucent Beings.

The festival continues to explore what documentary means. A new section called Doc-Fi shows how permeable the boundaries between documentary and fiction film are and new Reality TV section introduces the actual shapes of the crossbred genres like docudrama, docusoap, reality show or mockumentary to the audience. In 2011 festival introduced Radiodocumentary, section of radio documents.

The festival is famous for its informal atmosphere, discussion character and full cinemas – in total more than 30.000 viewers visited last year’s film screenings. The festival brings along a wide accompanying programme such as author readings, theatre cabarets, concerts of alternative music or Darkroom, focusing on still images on the big screen.

16th Jihlava IDFF 2012 will take place on October 23 - 28, in Jihlava (Czech Republic).

New promotional and networking project for talented producers from EU countries

The four-day project will include self-presentation of producers to film community, Round tables with film experts, Master Classes, Case studies, networking events etc. The aim of the project is to provide talented European producers with easy access to information in the field of audiovision as well as orientation on the film market, to point them out to professionals from various fields of the film industry by means of an extensive presentation, to create a new platform for the encounters of film professionals with an emphasis on documentary cinematography and, last but not least, establish contact with colleagues from other countries and thus increase the potential of future European international coproductions.

Docu Talents from the East will be held on Tuesday, July 3rd 2012, in Karlovy Vary, as part of Docu Day at the Karlovy Vary IFF. The annual event is organized by Jihlava IDFF and Karlovy Vary IFF. Since 2005, Docu Talents from the East has been a launch pad for a number of documentaries, including Rabbit a la Berlin, Blind Loves, Matchmaking Mayor, The Mosquito Problem and Other Stories, Kites, Cooking History, Rene , Czech Peace, Generation Singles or Six Degrees.

A four-day meeting of 10 selected directors from around the world and significant personalities from outside the film community; scientists, writers, visual artists, philosophers.
Lecturers in 2011: Carlos A. Aguilera, Cuban poet and writer, member of the youngest generation of local authors. He is the founder of the now banned Diáspora(s) magazine. Y.A. Padmanabha Rao, Indian expert on education development, who has launched an innovative project, educating over 10 million children from 200 000 schools in the poorest parts of the world. Alexei Plutser-Sarno and Jana Sarno, members of the provocative Russian art group Voina reflecting on the political situation in Russia in an original way.
