Beginning as a ragged camp on Wall Street's doorstep last September, the Occupy movement quickly exploded into one of the most powerful social movements in decades. Within weeks hundreds of encampments sprung up on Main Streets around the world, decrying the vise grip on power by the wealthiest 1% and demanding true political and economic democracy for the 99%. Bursting with determination and creativity, the Occupy movement transformed the national debate from austerity to inequality.

Occupy has inspired countless artists to produce visionary collaborative projects, short art films and sweeping documentaries capturing the spirit of the movement. On the first anniversary, at a premiere independent cinema in downtown New York City, Occupy the Film Festival is bringing together the most compelling and innovative films of the movement, from its roots in the Spanish Indignados, the Arab Spring and American factory floor occupations, to the mini-societies that blossomed in public squares, to the post-encampment community organizing around home foreclosures, corporate regulation, labor and immigrant struggles, and student debt.
