Producer/Director Jim Long of Lightcatcher Productions announced the development and launch of The Menorah Channel offering HD programming produced and shot on-location in Israel. The content is streamed via the increasingly popular Roku Player, a device that already enables millions of viewers to enjoy video-on-demand through the likes of Netflix, Amazon Instant Video and Hulu, as well as live events on standard definition and big screen tvs. The Roku Player is already in millions of U.S. homes and recently became available in Canada, with plans for a European launch. The Menorah Channel masthead, 'Shedding light on the people, history, culture, sights & sounds of Israel', according to Long, "Makes it clear that we're focusing on the most interesting aspects of the Jewish experience in modern Israel." The Menorah Channel, in addition to its free content, offers pay-per-view Israeli feature films and docs with English subtitles.
Long recently returned from a month-long stint in the country acquiring location footage and interviews for the Menorah Channel. Long says he's also developing two feature-length dramatic films designed to be shot in Israel.

Diverse Voices in Docs, a new professional development and mentorship program for emerging documentary makers of color, launches with a free, public kick-off event at the Community Film Workshop of Chicago at 6:30-8:30pm on November 8th. Please join us.
Created through collaboration between Community Film Workshop and Kartemquin Films, Diverse Voices in Docs will enroll its first class of up to 20 documentary makers in January 2013.
“Our goal is to empower ordinary citizens in the use of media and to provide them access to resources to produce first-voice social issue documentaries,” said Margaret Caples, Executive Director of The Community Film Workshop, which has taught classes in video production and multimedia in under-served communities since 1971. “It is also imperative to distribute media made by and about people of color to an international audience to broaden the discussion on universal problems of inequities.”
At the core of the program are six intensive three-hour workshops held monthly at the Community Film Workshop, with creative advice provided by Kartemquin Films’ world-class staff and associates. Each session will provide practical skill-enrichment designed to help incubate the attendee’s next documentary project, as well as connecting them to an expert community, new collaborators, and a wider network of funders and distributors.
Workshop sessions will focus on applied learning and honing skills in areas such as fundraising, storytelling, production techniques, distribution and marketing. The program will culminate in exposure through a final public exhibition in late 2013.
Applicants should be filmmakers who have played a principal role in a completed production (producer, writer, director, editor, etc.) and have experience or work history that demonstrated their commitment to social issue documentary.
Interested filmmakers can find more information and should apply by December 17th via www.kartemquin.com/diversevoices.
"Community-building is at the heart of all our work, and so in this program, just as with our acclaimed internship, the goal will be as much on fostering collaborative connections between the filmmakers as it will be on honing skills,” said Tim Horsburgh, Kartemquin’s Director of Communications and Programs. “We’re aiming for nothing less than ensuring the healthy future of Chicago’s documentary scene. To do that, we need to make sure opportunities are provided in underserved communities.”
Further perks for enrolled filmmakers will include sessions introducing them to notable broadcasters, funders and distributors, access to Kartemquin’s invite-only “KTQ Labs: Feedback Screenings” program, where Kartemquin’s filmmaker community provides free rough-cut consulting to Midwest documentarians, and merchandise (supported by KatLei productions).
The program is also funded in part through grants from Joyce Foundation and the Academy for Motion Picture Arts & Sciences.

Is there a category "less than news, bigger than a comment"?? Vanity Fair Nov 2012 published my letter to the editor in regard to a nice article about weddings. I have strong feelings about weddings, and it seems so does everyone else. My very new theory on World Peace is that everyone should get married, or marry yourself:
"Same Self Wedding". I liked the article a lot, very thorough; so did a lady in The Netherlands, as described in her Letter to the Editor. The other 2 letters were from people who are quite cranky about weddings, somewhat proprietary even! Page 76 Nov James Bond cover Vanity Fair. So nice to be included.

We are opening a film that Tom Brokaw calls, "Heart-warming and Inspirational," in New York City.
Please view our trailer at www.thekevinlauestory.com to support our film on the first disabled one-arm basketball player in NCAA Division One History. His compelling story of courage to overcome his disability and the loss of his father at the age of ten will inspire all.
Based in LA, I am reaching out to the documentary film world for support of this film. Any thoughts or ideas on how to spread the word throughout the New York film community is great appreciated.
Thank-you in advance,
Franklin Martin

Nancy Bechtol's first feature documentary for release FALL 2012.
"Free Speech & the Transcendent Journey of Chris Drew, Street Artist"
Chris Drew,Street Artist sells Art for $1 in Chicago-Loop charged with Class1 Felony Eavesdropping.SURPRISING Constitutional Challenge
Nearing completion after 4 years, will be released Fall, 2012. The feature will be 88 minutes. An amazing journey and an educational experience of transcendence that few see in their lifetime. A story of Free Speech, Constitutional Law, Liberty, and the major determination of a Street Artist, Chris Drew, who was fearless in defending his and everyone's rights. I walked part of this journey with Chris Drew as his primary documentarian at his request, along with the crew, Ron Grenko and Hermann Wieland. Immense respect for his pro-bono attorneys, Mark Weinberg and Joshua Kutnick, who defended him during the 2.5 years in court, which ended with a judgement that the Illinois Eavesdropping Law was UNCONSTITUTIONAL!
Currently on KICKSTARTER for funding for making DVDs, distribution, educational consultant and PR.
trailer can be viewed at:
Clik on link below to see it! (3 min long) This is the trailer. Please view--only there for a short time…..yes, as we all are

Centex Enterprises has just finished production on the feature Doc "American Courtesans". A film written by myself, Kristen DiAngelo and Producer/Director James Johnson.
“American Courtesans” is an intimate portrayal of modern day escorts in America. In our own words we discuss our lives, the events that led us into our profession, and the reasons we stay. We welcome you into our world for a brief moment and will be candid and honest about what life is like for us; each of us willing to offer up our life experiences. We only ask that you listen with an open mind, and allow us to show you who we are.
We will address the stereotyping and social stigma attached to this profession and what it has cost us. You will see who we are through eyes of our clients, spouses, children, and parents, along with the contributions and impact it has had on their lives. This is a true documentary so you will also find that many of us have made poor choices, based on life circumstances, that we are vividly candid about.
We are women who come from all walks of life, we are your neighbors, your daughters, your mothers, and your sisters. We shop in the same stores as you and eat right beside you without you ever knowing we exist. We are American Courtesans and we welcome you to our world.....
On our website you will find RSVP forms for our private screenings. One to be held in Los Angeles and one to be held in NYC. As well as our trailer.
