A.V. Club's 'Faux-Real' List

The A.V. Club has put together a list of films that blur the line between truth and fiction. We've all grown accustomed to the idea of reality shows containing a large amount of scripted content, but we generally assume our docs are still pretty pure. However, the practice of incorporating recreations, "suggesting" certain actions to one's subjects and having "fake" characters interact with real people has a long tradition.

The list includes recent films such as Borat and Paper Heart, but also reaches back through time to highlight such films as Cocksucker Blues, Robert Frank’s infamous documentary of the Rolling Stones' 1972 U.S. tour. The 1957 Walt Disney Studios nature documentary Perri follows the life of a squirrel, as mapped out in advance by Bambi author Felix Salten. Sounds like a precursor to Animal Planet's hit series Meerkat Manor

It's a great list that includes descriptions and video clips. One more to add to the list: Big Time, a film we programmed at HBO's U.S. Comedy Arts Festival in 2001. The film blurred the line between fantasy and reality as a fake film crew comprised of actors mixed with real adult-film stars at their annual convention in Las Vegas. The "crew" went to the convention with the goal of selling a porn film that didn't actually exist, and the resulting film was the chronicle of what happened on location during their Vegas sojourn.
