As IFP's Independent Filmmaker Conference comes to a close, a few tidbits out of NYC...
In an article on indieWire, Peter Broderick defines his "10 Principles of Hybrid Distribution," which he defines as:
Let’s start with a definition. Hybrid distribution combines direct sales by filmmakers with distribution by third parties (e.g. DVD distributors, TV channels, VOD companies, educational distributors). In the Old World of Distribution, Plan A was to give all your distribution rights to one company and Plan B was self-distribution. In the New World, Plan A is doing your own direct sales while splitting up the other rights; Plan B is making an all-rights deal with one company.
For a breakdown of how to approach this New World of Distribution, read his piece for tips on maximizing revenues, assembling your team and determining your strategy. For more background information on the topic, read his 2008 iW piece, "Welcome to the New World of Distribution."
The folks at IFP are trying a little hybrid experiment of their own. As reported in Variety,
New York-based Independent Filmmaker Project and London-based networking org Shooting People have formed a strategic partnership that provides complementary memberships to each other’s organizations for the next year.
The combined reach of the two orgs is approximately 50,000 filmmakers.
