Hit the ground running, literally, on Sunday morning with a stop at the Palms gym before high-tailing it to a screening of Last Cup: Road to the World Series of Beer Pong. In an effort to enhance my experience of the film, I snuck a slice of pizza into the theater. Pizza + beer = natural fit.
Next stop was Chelsea on the Rocks, Abel Ferrara’s film about the famed NYC coop. I stopped into a reception for The Black List: Volume 1, where I caught up with AFI Fest's Lane Kneedler, Shaz Bennett and Jacqueline Lyanga. We admired the exposed glass shower stalls and munched on some yummy ahi tuna apps, and then I dashed off to the intense narrative feature Memorial Day, directed by Josh Fox. I finished up my day of screenings with Nicola Collins’ doc The End, a gritty black and white look at a group of gangsters and criminals from London's East End.
I can't share my thoughts on the films yet due to Jury duty, but I can say that I understand why each and every film I've seen so far at this festival has been programmed. Each has something unique to offer audiences, and it's clear why the programming staff chose to introduce these films to a wider audience. Kudos to Trevor and Mike.
As we were leaving The End, Morgan invited myself and fellow doc juror Robert Abele to head up with him to a poker tournament party put on by Shoreline Entertainment. It was in a phat suite with two bowling lanes (apparently there’s also a suite in the hotel that has a basketball court, but I haven’t found that one yet).
I’ve never played poker before, but after watching several hands of Texas Hold ‘Em, I couldn't help myself. I got the fever...joined the next round...and walked away with $100! Call it beginner's luck, call me a natural bluffer - I just know one thing - I'm lovin' the CineVegas!
Variety's film festival editor Mike Jones was the other big winner of the night. You can check out his account of CineVegas adventures at The Circuit.
I also recall Tamara riding on someone's lap in a cab that was over-loaded and having to duck and hide because a cop drove by and the cabbie didn't want to get in trouble. (Then I made a hilarious joke about Tamara being on the "duck" jury...well maybe not hilarious...)
