CineVegas: Lost in the Fog of Beautiful Losers and Ping-Pong

Monday began with a screening of Aaron Rose and Joshua Leonard's Beautiful Losers, which premiered at SXSW earlier this spring. The film documents the evolution of a group of artists who sprung from the DIY (do-it-yourself) subcultures of skateboarding, surf, punk, hip hop and graffiti in the early '90s, including Harmony Korine, Stephen Powers, Mike Mills, Margaret Kilgallen and Geoff McFetridge.

After the film, fellow doc juror Robert Abele gave myself and BWR's Chris Libby a ping-pong lesson in the CV HQ. Not quite as lucrative as the poker game the night before, but perhaps a new skill that might get me into a little less trouble.

After wearing myself out attempting to return Robert's speedy balls (he's got a wicked topspin), I ran off to my final Pioneer Documentary screening. John Cory's Lost in the Fog gives audiences an inside look at the world of horse-racing through the story of American thoroughbred Lost in the Fog and 87-year-old owner Harry Aleo.
