Academy Award-nominee Morgan Spurlock (Super Size Me, 30 Days) is on board to produce and direct The Simpsons 20th Anniversary Special in 3-D on Ice, a documentary special celebrating the show's past two decades of brilliance. According to the blog at Fox.com, the show will air on Thursday, January 14th, 2010, marking the conclusion of a year-long celebration of The Simpsons.
Spurlock will examine the cultural phenomenon of The Simpsons in his distinctive and innovative style. The special will document how the world sees The Simpsons and how the Simpson family has seen the world for two decades.
In a Q&A at WSJ.com, Spurlock says, "The producers of the show, Jim Brooks and Al Jean, plus the folks at Fox, called me up and literally just asked if I’d be interested in working on a twentieth-anniversary special for them. They’d seen my work and I was blown away — what more could a guy who grew up watching the show his whole life ever want?
I'd love to see Spurlock attempt to convince Homer to modify his less-than-healthy eating habits, but I have a feeling Homer might actually win that battle!
Shooting commences in a few weeks at Comic-Con, where Spurlock and crew will be looking for real-life Simpsons fantatics. If you fall into this category, or look or sound like anyone in Springfield, film auditions will take place in San Diego on Saturday, July 25th. Those interested in auditioning should submit their contact information along with a note about which character they have an affinity for to reallifesimpsons@gmail.com. Full details can be found on the Fox.com blog.
