PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

Executive Producer, Writer, Director
Michael Rose Productions, Inc. 1996 - Current

Currently heads own boutique production company specializing in programming for television. Building on the axiom, “Good Stories, Well Told,” written, directed and produced over 200 factual specials and series for television on everything from classic cars, high-tech manufacturing, urban preservation and safeguarding the environment, to documentaries on the dangers of aging drivers, the lives of UAW leader Walter Reuther, the history of the woman’s movement, rockers ZZ Top and Elvis Presley and the joys of owning a private jet.

Supervising Producer, Writer, Director - "Automobiles" series
The Network Group 1993 - 1996

Developed and produced an ongoing documentary television series about automotive history. Responsible for day to day relations with the broadcasters, story selection, stock footage acquisition, research, writing, directing and producing episodes for the series. Also, coordinated the activities of contributing producers, researchers and writers from around the world. This series launched Arts and Entertainment's History Channel in the United States (where it ran for over 10 years), and was seen on The Discovery Channel in Europe, Planet in France, ITVS in England, Orbit in the Middle East and XYZ/Quest cable in Australia.

General Motors Photographic 1983 - 1993

Involved in all phases of corporate film and videotape production from concept through the delivery of the program. Responsibilities included: client relations, writing, directing, producing, celebrity talent negotiations, budgeting, production coordination, ensuring compliance with union and guild regulations, supervision of duplication, packaging, distribution and publicity. Successfully created and managed projects with budgets as large as $1.5 million, in multiple language versions, sent to over 100,000 recipients.

Producer-Writer - "National Security"
Pacifica Radio, KPFK Los Angeles 1982 - 1983

Created and produced a weekly public affairs program focusing on national security issues. Developed the overall program format, determined the weekly subjects, conducted preliminary interviews and coordinated all guest appearances. This series continues today under the name, Background Briefing.

Media Director
Committee to Bridge the Gap 1980 - 1982

With grants from the Liberty Hill Foundation, organized students, professionals and community members into an effective advocacy group. Conducted training on how to research issues, package the results for media consumption and pursue judicial and legislative remedies for social problems.

Among other accomplishments, these efforts helped to halt the resumption of the ocean disposal of nuclear wastes and spawned the first successful challenge of the relicensing of a nuclear reactor.

National Bar Association: Wrote a series of PSA's for an advertising campaign to stem the increase in Hate Crimes.

Campaign to Re-Elect Maryann Mahaffey to Detroit City Council: Producer & Director of two television commercials.

National Society to Prevent Blindness: Producer & Director of two television PSA's.

Detroit Chapter of the American Red Cross: Producer & Director of two television PSA's.

PUBLIC AFFAIRS TELEVISION PROGRAMS

Community Information Project (CIP), KCET, Public Television in Los Angeles: Researched and set up interviews for a weekly investigative news magazine program. CBS correspondent Mike Wallace described CIP's efforts in the Columbia Journalism Review as "first rate, careful and thorough."

KCET, Public Television in Los Angeles: Producer & writer of a one half-hour special on the SALT II treaty.

KABC Special Projects, ABC Affiliate in Los Angeles: As a consultant, developed a two part mini-documentary that revealed, for the first time on television, that the United States had suffered numerous space nuclear mishaps. Broke the story that the Star Wars missile system might have to be nuclear powered.

KCET, Public Television in Los Angeles: Producer of a two part special that discovered that mercury, cadmium lead and other toxic wastes were being dumped daily into the Santa Monica Bay. The subsequent media attention generated by this helped to prod local government agencies to curtail dumping and created the environment for the development of citizen's watch groups e.g. Heal the Bay.

Prism Productions, Mr. Wizard: Production Manager, supervised the production of 26 science news segments that were syndicated to 182 independent television stations for use in their news programs. These were hosted by Don Herbert, "Mr. Wizard," and funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation and General Motors.

KTLA Television, Golden West Broadcasting: Producer of a one-hour special program concerning the Soviet and United States development of nuclear first strike capabilities. The program was hosted by Robert Walden of "Lou Grant."

WTVS, Public Television in Detroit: Producer of an annual one-hour program that highlighted the best work of young Michigan film and video makers.

LONG FORM DOCUMENTARY

Earthworks Films, "Broken Rainbow”: Researched and developed the story and coordinated the initial shooting for a feature length documentary about a land dispute between two native American tribes, the Hopi and the Navajo. This film won an Academy Award.

News for Now Foundation, "The Murder of Vincent Chin": Provided location coordination and stock footage research for this Peabody Award winning and Academy Award nominee about the beating death of a young Asian American man in Detroit.

"Strategic Trust": Provided research and story consultation for this Academy Award nominee about the United States Military's plans to turn a tranquil So. Pacific Island into a thermonuclear weapons garrison.

PROFESSIONAL CRAFT EXPERIENCE:

Apprentice Editor - Comworld Productions

Apprentice to John Martinelli (Emmy Award Winning film editor and past president of the American Cinema Editors) developed understanding of traditional motion picture editing aesthetics while assisting in the editing of made for television movies.

Assistant Editor - Gloria Monty, Comworld Productions

Developed the post production system, an early attempt at non-linear editing that was featured in an On Location Magazine article, for a five-part, prime time, dramatic television series.
