Mr. Hammel is an award winning film producer/director with more than 25 years of experience in all forms of media. He has managed project budgets up to one million dollars, and supervised cast and crews exceeding fifty people. He has worked in all types of production including: commercials, business to business, internal communications, business theatre, music videos, documentaries, short dramatic features, multi-media, multi-screen, and performance art. Mr. Hammel has received over 100 International Awards, including two Gold Hugos and two Cine Golden Eagles.

A founder of this creative services company, responsible for the following aspects of the business: client relations, sales, marketing, proposals, project bids, procurement, hiring, creative development, producing, designing, and directing individual projects, as well as supervising subcontractors hired for specific projects. Over the past seventeen years, has built the business from a single client to a niche market of multiple clients who demand diversified services, including print, design, and training as well as video and film.
Clients include: Johns Hopkins University, Ameriprise, American Express, Scholarship America, Ameriprise, Metropolitan Transit Commission, Jostens, Minnesota Historical Society, Wells Fargo, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Survival Skills Institute, State of Minnesota, Target Corporation, University of Minnesota, TV Guide, Eli Lilly, John Ryan and Company, and Prentice-Hall.
Key Accomplishments:
• National Meetings – Over a fifteen year period, produced and directed video modules for Ameriprise Financial’s semi annual national sales meetings. Content included announcements of major company initiatives, client interviews, entertainment, and advisor recognition. For example: produced and directed thirty-two video modules depicting a battle in cyberspace between Ameriprise and its competitors; the program featured Peter Graves as “The Cyber Server”. This program won a Bronze Metal in the Business Theatre category at the International Film and Video Festival of New York. Called a “vital member of the team” by Steve Elbert, Ameriprise Vice President of Conferences and Events.
• Customer Service – Produced and directed a series of twelve thirty minute videos for Metris Corporation to introduce new employees to the various divisions of Metris, including customer service, collections, fraud, etc. Created a series of videos for Wells Fargo employees promoting the concept of the bank as a financial service store. Subjects included role modeling for bankers and a best practices video showing a day at the bank from four different points of view: bank manager, banker, teller and customer.
• Marketing – Produced and directed a series of videos for Ameriprise Financial to introduce prospective employees to career path choices within the company. The videos were designed to sell a career with Ameriprise Financial to prospective employees. The campaign included a corporate image video, video highlighting women advisors, and a recruitment video.
• Visitor Center Presentation – Produced and directed a video for the Minnesota Historical Society to welcome visitors to the research library. The video, produced for less than $20,000, won a Gold Hugo at Intercom and a Cine Golden Eagle, placing higher than the Visitor Introduction Video from Colonial Williamsburg.
• Point of Purchase – Produced, directed, and designed three video wall installations for John Ryan Companies. Installed in malls across the US, the video walls explained the benefits of online banking, and convinced customers to sign up for banking services.
• Home Video – Produced and directed “Good Kid - Bad Choices”, a video on parenting teens for Target Corporation. In three weeks, developed the concept, interviewed parents and kids, shot cover footage, designed graphics, and edited the program. The tape was sold nationwide in Target Stores as part of its Parent Club merchandizing program. Awards include a Cine Golden Eagle and a Bronze Medal from the International Film & TV Festival of New York.

Responsible for high level projects in corporate communications, educational, and documentary media. Managed all non-broadcast work; created client proposals and budgets; initiated new sales; developed client relationships; maintained customer base, and department budget; supervised staff and freelance crew on a project basis. Key accomplishments:
• Point of Purchase: Produced, directed, wrote, designed, and supervised installation of two video walls in Duty Free Shops – Hawaii main store on Waikiki Beach: a nine by three video wall in the main lobby that welcomed Japanese tourists and introduced them to the shopping experience, and a one by nine display that promoted “Quikset” – gift packages of liquor, perfume and tobacco. The project budget was over one million, including installation of the hardware.
• Education: Developed, produced, and directed a series of award-winning videos for Paradigm Publishing on such topics as effective teaching, telephone manners, computer skills, and office procedures. These videos, which have won nine awards, are still being used in the classroom today, as effective and entertaining as when they were first produced. For Jostens, developed, produced and directed, “The Y Club”, an eight part video curriculum that taught high school students how to publish a yearbook. This curriculum won four awards in international film festivals.
• Training: Working with the Survival Skills Institute, developed and produced a video and integrated it into SSI’s Black Parenting curriculum. The video, funded by the McKnight Foundation, became the essential teaching tool of the program. The program won three film festival awards
• Performance Art: Collaborating with composer Mary Ellen Childs, produced and directed “A Chording To”, a four by five video wall /performance piece, that had a live accordion player, playing in sync with four different prerecorded audio tracks, and four different prerecorded images of himself. Funded by the McKnight Foundation, the program was presented at The Southern Theatre, The Walker Art Center, and MOMA.
• Fundraising: For Scholarship America, the nation’s largest private sector scholarship organization, produced and directed an award winning dramatic film that depicts the impact a scholarship can have on the life of a young girl. “Commercials” were spaced throughout the film to promoted Scholarship America. The Vice President of Development for the organization said: “We achieved our financial objective, largely due to this film. The film was structured so we could organize our presentations around it, and it presented a consistent message to our diverse audience.”
EMCOM Corporate Communications 1984-1988
General Manager/Creative Director
Created a new division for this commercial production company. Developed the division from one person to four and from zero revenue to over one a million a year. Responsible for sales, budget, project management, marketing, public relations, and supervision of direct reports. Developed all creative for clients; made all presentations for potential work; produced and directed high level projects for the division.
Clients include: General Motors, University of Minnesota Alumnae Association, IBM, Tennant Company, Colgate-Palmolive, Skyline Displays, Carlson Companies, CNS, Honeywell, EDS, Sam Goody, National Car Rental, Minnesota Bankers Association, and United Way.
Key accomplishments:
• Fundraising: Produced and directed the annual fund raiser dinner for the University of Minnesota Alumnae Association. Program included: “A Visit from Aristotle E. Quark”: a three screen, synced presentation, staring Eddie Albert; “Memories of the U”: a three screen, synced presentation, featuring University of Minnesota Alumnae; a marching band; a choir; a video wall in the reception area, featuring a tribute to University of Minnesota athletes; speaker support; and I-MAG. Program won a Monitor Award for best Design / Video Special Effects.
• National Sales Meeting: For Honeywell, produced a three screen, synced video presentation using department staff to play of roles of news anchors and reporters. Program included fake commercials for Honeywell products, and a music video featuring the marketing team from Honeywell. The program forged a new process for three screen projection,
• Education: “A New Season” a film shot on location in Atwater Minnesota, depicts life in small rural communities struggling to survive. Made for the Minnesota Bankers Association, the program was used to encourage small town bankers to stimulate the economy in their regions. The Association's Executive Director stated: “A New Season is a real masterpiece. The content, artistry, and professionalism give the film tremendous impact.”
Honeywell Film/Video Services 1973-1984
Creative Director/Production Manager
Joined the company as a producer/director/writer; worked in all areas of film/video production; rose to become head of the department. In this position, managed the operation of a 2.5 million dollar a year in-house production department with a staff of fifteen. The department produced over 200 films, videotapes and multi-image programs a year. Customer base included over 15 Honeywell divisions as well as U.S. government agencies. Responsible for staffing, budgets, outside vendor management, capital equipment purchases, procurement, and myriad other functions
Key accomplishments:
• Management: Grew the department from a two person documentation crew to a full scale production shop, providing complete film and video services. Developed a charge back system and marketed to outside customers. Made contact with government agencies and developed an ongoing production relationship with them. Motivated staff to work independently and act as accounts managers.
• Engineer’s Night: This annual event started as a simple dinner with some awards. Over the years, due to creative proposals, the dinner became an entertainment event with the budget going from $10,000 to $100,000. For the 100th anniversary of Honeywell, the program consisted of four stages positioned around the banquet hall. The action rotated around the audience, so that as a live melodrama depicting the founding of Honeywell finished on the front stage, a film on the foibles of engineers started on the rear stage. At the end of the film, awards were presented on the side stages. The program, hosted by Peter Toland, included a band, live performances, multi-screen projections, speaker support, awards modules, and I-MAG.
