Gay Muslims (U.S. Television Premiere) – Five gay British Muslims open up about their experiences as members of a religious culture that condemns their sexual orientation. The film captures the diversity of the Muslim community as it traces the experiences of its subjects, who include Adnan Ali, Britain’s first openly gay Muslim activist; Abdullah, who suppressed his sexuality for many years and fathered three children in his arranged marriage; and Farah, a student who was kicked out by her family when she came out as a lesbian at age 17. Also appearing in the film is a renowned Islamic scholar, American Dr. Scott-Siraj Al-Haqq Kugle, who discusses the different schools of thought regarding the Qur’an’s teachings on love, and argues that strict readings against homosexuality are a modern invention.
Directed by Cara Lavan.
