YouTube, the online video giant, has joined the burgeoning ranks of web-based opportunities for filmmakers to showcase their short and feature-length work—in the case of YouTube, in a more structured setting. The YouTube Screening Room, as the venture is called, will stream four shorts—and an occasional feature--every two weeks. Although the offerings will come from around the world, the initial launch will focus on work from Norway, Sweden, Canada, the UK and the US. Information about monetary compensation is a bit sketchy; filmmakers will receive a majority percentage of the ad revenue generated from the films, and viewers will have an option to purchase, with links to the filmmakers’ websites. Here’s a piece from WorldScreen, and here’s the YouTube Screening Room itself.
