Deep Dive into Virtual Reality: VR Documentary Workshop

Impact Hub Los Angeles, 830 Traction Ave, #3A, Los Angeles CA 90013

Join us for a very special Virtual Reality (VR) Documentary Workshop that features a hands-on approach to the new world of VR, discussing current tools, emerging techniques and methodologies, as well as the ethical concerns of this rapidly evolving medium. This daylong workshop is specifically designed to give nonfiction filmmakers practical knowledge in every major aspect of crafting VR in documentary, from how to use this growing technology to tell a story to developing effective strategies for distribution and engagement / outreach campaigns.

Led by Jeff Fitzsimmons, Kelly Fitzsimmons, Brad Lichtenstein, and Julie Young, the team behind the Planned Parenthood collaboration Across the Line, which premiered at Sundance and was shown at SXSW, Tribeca and a host of other film festivals in 2016, the workshop will guide you through the new world of VR while building upon frameworks and vernacular common to documentary filmmaking. Get a deeper understanding of what VR is and is not; how documentary techniques and goals can translate to this new medium; and accelerate your learning curve so that you can begin creating projects in the VR documentary space.

Built into the workshop will be a generous amount of time for Q&A. We also invite you to join us downstairs at the Arts District Brewery for peer to peer networking after the workshop.

On Friday April 22, a range of dynamic VR projects will be available for viewing to those registered for either the Thursday VR panel or the Saturday VR Workshop. On Saturday April 23, the Across the Line team from Custom Reality Services will present a daylong “how to” workshop that will explore the VR creative process in depth. Note: those who register for the panel or workshop will be contacted with further information on how to register for an assigned viewing time slot on Friday at the Impact Hub Los Angeles. Hours will be from 10:00am - 5:00pm.
