The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) seeks an exceptional Executive Producer to lead a new, long-term initiative for the production of high-quality science documentary films at its headquarters in Chevy Chase, MD.
As the largest private supporter of biomedical research and science education in the United States, HHMI believes there is a need for more television programs that bring new scientific knowledge to large audiences, illustrate the scientific process, and inspire the next generation of scientists, educators, and general public. The Executive Producer will have overall responsibility for the production of series and individual programs, and development of strategies for their broadcast and promotion. He or she will work with the Vice President for Science Education to research and evaluate prospective program ideas, and will be responsible for commissioning programs and supervising independent producers. The Executive Producer will work with HHMI’s outstanding in-house educational resources team to facilitate the development of program-derived materials for the classroom.
Principal Responsibilities:
Creative leadership. Take a lead role in the research, development, and creation of new programs and series across a broad swath of compelling subject areas. Select, support, and work collaboratively with talented filmmakers to produce important, original programs of the highest quality and impact. Establish high content, production, and creative standards.
Strategic leadership. Develop partnerships, including co-productions where desirable, with existing strands and broadcasters in order to bring programs to the largest, most appropriate audiences, including international markets. Work with HHMI and external communications experts to devise and implement the best means for promoting programs. Collaborate with HHMI staff, outside consultants, and broadcasters to establish online distribution channels.
Program management. Supervise program producers throughout all stages of production by reviewing ongoing projects and providing timely, constructive feedback. Oversee the post-production process through program broadcast. Work with HHMI legal and financial staff throughout the process to ensure that all related business transactions are conducted at the highest professional standards.
Budget. Work with the Vice President for Science Education to prepare production and promotion budgets. Ensure that field producers have sufficient time and resources to produce exceptional films. Monitor production expenses and progress to ensure that films are made on-budget and delivered on-time.
Preferred Qualifications:
A minimum of 10 years experience in producing long-form, science-oriented, non-fiction television programs.
A firm commitment to and demonstrable track record of creating and producing high-quality, original programs.
Must have thorough knowledge of the television production process, from development through post-production, including:
Exceptional story telling, writing, and editorial skills
Extensive experience in field producing and directing
Substantial experience in supervising producers, including animators and musicians
Knowledge of post-production process
Knowledge of industry standards for rights and clearances
Excellent leadership and collaborative skills
Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
Experience in managing program budgets
Broad knowledge of and experience working with leading commercial and public broadcasters of science programming
Solid understanding of the role of the web in enhancing program impact
Strong commitment to educational outreach
