Beth Newell is a British documentary-maker and multi-media producer/director, born and raised in London, now living and working in New York City (and taking advantage of her dual UK/US citizenship!).
Her first producer credit was BOOKBOX (2001), a multimedia project profiling popular UK children’s authors, and featuring streaming video interviews. The website was nominated for both BIMA and BETT awards.
Other highlights from her 10+ years in the industry include: PRESERVED OF GOD (2005), an acclaimed 60-minute radio drama for BBC Radio 4. Written by Justin Butcher, it was based on the harrowing real-life experiences of Nigerian musician Ben Okafor growing up during the Biafran War of Independence; in 2006, she produced a 30-minute documentary about performing arts education in Cuba, which screened at Rich Mix in East London.
Since 2006, Beth has specialized in producing and directing short-format films for broadcast and non-broadcast clients, for example READING FILM: DANGLE (producer/director) and SUPERSONIC ORCHESTRA (producer), which both won Royal Television Society awards. More recently, she has made documentaries about the challenges facing educationalists in Mexico and Chile, and developed a series of films about UK weather and climate.
Beth has worked for Channel 4, the BBC, and created films in partnership with the British Council and the OECD.
