Biography: 

Courtney Hermann is an award-winning independent documentary filmmaker and film and video educator from Portland, Oregon. She received the inaugural Outstanding Faculty Award at the Art Institute of Portland in 2006, where she is a faculty member and Assistant Academic Department Director of the Digital Film and Video Department. In 2012, Courtney was nominated for Hand-Eye Supply/Core 77's contest, "Portland's Most Inspirational Makers" and subsequently was voted in as "Portland's Creative Overlord". She holds an MFA degree in Film and Video Production from Columbia College Chicago, where she studied with Michael Rabiger and Herb DiGioia.

Courtney's most recent independent films include Crying Earth Rise Up (in-progress), Exotic World and the Burlesque Revival (2012), and Standing Silent Nation (2007).

Crying Earth Rise Up (in-progress) is funded in large part by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting's Native American Public Telecommunications. Production is wrapping and post-production is in full swing.

Exotic Word and the Burlesque Revival (2012) enjoyed a World Premiere in Summer 2012 at dOCUMENTA13, an important exhibition of modern art–an event that only happens once every 5 years and features art from around the world. The popularity of the film prompted programmers to add 2 additional screenings. Exotic World is currently screening at film festivals, microcinema venues and art museums.

Standing Silent Nation (2007) aired nationally on PBS’s Emmy-award winning documentary series, P.O.V., was favorably reviewed by The New York Times, and won the audience award at several film festivals, including the Sedona International Film Festival. The film was featured daily at the Smithsonian Institution’s Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C. in July
2008. It has also been programmed by numerous libraries, organizations, colleges and universities across the country.

Courtney's work has earned grant awards from CPB's Native American Public Telecommunications, The Paul Robeson Fund for Independent Media and The Playboy Foundation. In 2011, she worked on a sucessful Kickstarter campaign that brought in over $27,000 in online support and $5,000 in other individual donor support for post-production expenses on Exotic World.
Courtney is committed to media arts education and culture. She has presented a number of lectures, talks, panels and screenings, at events sponsored by NW Documentary, the University Film and Video Association, Oregon Women in Higher Education, Oregon Media Production Association, and Film Action Oregon/The Hollywood Theatre.

Her students' work has screened on MTV, Logo, Comcast Sports Net, Current TV, at numerous film festivals, on the POV/American Documentary website, and as a part of the University Film and Video Association's curated program, NextFrame. Courtney and her students participated in five International Documentary Challenge contests where they earned a place among the top 12 finalists four times and won the POV/American Documentary Award once. Her former students are counted among independent filmmakers and media professionals from New York to Los Angeles and points in between.
