I directed Living For 32 because it is personal story that reaches every corner of America. From Colin being shot at Virginia Tech to a Harlem mother losing two sons to handguns, to the halls of government.
Living for 32 is an American story about guns, bullets, second amendment rights and what it is like to be shot and live through a massacre in a school classroom.I told a story about a real American tragedy. 32 killed in class and 17 wounded. I had to understand all these complex issues and tell Colin’s story unbiased. It was my job to capture Colin's compassion, conviction and strength. He trusted me with my New York energy and passion not to bring frill or performance to his story.
Colin made it clear he is not an actor and the tears aren't going to stream. He is not going to pound his fists. He looked me in the eyes and had the confidence to say what exactly he felt. He wasn't doing takes over and over. This is visceral story telling. When you direct a story like Living For 32 you had better be honest and prepared. Maybe a little thick skinned. My job was to give him the confidence to tell Living For 32. I made certain the cameras caught the moment. It was always about Colin and his moments.I am immensely proud to be able to tell his American story.
