I am a still photographer in New York (www.donfreemanphoto.com) and embarking on my first film project (www.donfreemanfilm.com)
Don Freeman is an American photographer, best known for his large, monochrome prints that depict subject matter, be it landscape, human forms or architectural fragments, in states of transmogrification. He lives in New York where he divides his time between fine art photography, commercial photography and filmmaking. Don's photographs have appeared regularly in Vogue, House Beautiful, Vanity Fair and other magazines. His assignments for The World of Interiors, documenting the homes of American artists like Eva Zeisel, Wharton Esherick, Russel Wright, James Rose and Henry Varnum Poor, reflects his deep interest in art and its place in living environments.
"I like the mood of Interiors. I feel I can represent the spirit of a place by observing how the daylight reveals its secrets... why we find perfection and beauty in it."
Don grew up surrounded by the stark natural beauty of Bainbridge Island, Washington. He studied advertising design at Northern Arizona University and fine art at San Francisco's Academy of Art. In 1982, he moved to New York to pursue painting, and had one-man shows at White Columns, Hallways, Elga Wimmer Gallery, Jayne Baum and others.
In 1989, Don moved to Paris and turned to photography as his medium. During his three years in Paris, he exhibited at Pierre Passabon Gallery and published My Familiar Dream, a limited edition book of black and white photographs of travels in Europe. The book can now be found in the permanent collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the Getty Museum in Los Angeles. His first commercial assignments were for French Vogue and L'Uomo Vogue as well as advertising campaigns for Hermes, Romeo Gigli, and Christian Louboutin.
After Paris, Don lived for a short time in London and began shooting interiors for The World of Interiors, AD France and Architektur & Wohnen as well as campaigns for Mulberry, Browns and others.
In 2006, The Hotel Book : Great Escapes North America was published by Taschen. Traveling to over 40 destinations in America and Canada, Don’s images capture the essence of luxury and escape. "I enjoyed shooting air stream trailers as much as luxury resorts, but I always looked to the land for inspiration."
Ted Muehling : A Portrait by Don Freeman, was published by Rizzoli in 2008,
a collection of photographs spanning over 20 years of the innovative jewelry designer’s work and their collaborations together. The book is interlaced with Don’s personal photography, which has always been an inspiration for Ted. "For 20 years Ted’s shop has given away postcards of my images and I became well know for that- people collected them, and hang onto them.”
His current projects, a book for Abrams titled Artists’ Handmade Houses and
a film called Living Art will document his love for the Artists’ home and show
off his talent for capturing interiors, objects and his favorite subject of all: light.
