Biography: 

Matthew Kohn has been a fan of new music since hearing Laurie Anderson’s “Big Science” on WNYC’s New Sounds in 1983. Since then, he’s been the lead poet in two bands backed by unknowns who are now all full time musicians. In 1995, his book LAKE SUCCESS was published by Soft Skull Press. The next year, he made the silent film SEA LEVEL INFERNO for drummer William Hooker and Mission of Burma’s Roger Miller, which premiered at the New York Underground Film Festival. Kohn followed up with music videos for the William Hooker/Thurston Moore Duo, Pere Ubu offshoot Home and Garden, Tigers and Monkeys and most recently, Cindy Lee Berryhill’s “When Did Jesus Become a Republican?” In 2000, Kohn commissioned a score by Tzadik label artist Kato Hideki for his short comedy ROSA X-RAYS JOE, featuring Drama Desk Award nominee Anita Durst. A film with only one kiss, Rosa won Best Experimental Film at SinCine 2002, an erotic film festival. His first feature documentary, which explored the Electoral College and electoral reform between the 2000 and 2004 elections, CALL IT DEMOCRACY (7th Art Releasing), premiered at the Palm Springs Film Festival in 2005, and has been seen at many other festivals and hundreds of college campuses. It is currently available for educational screenings through Cinema Guild and will be released commercially in 2008. Completed in 2007, SITE SPECIFIC: THE LEGACY OF REGIONAL MODERNISM, is a 22-minute investigation of architect Paul Rudolph and the relevance of his early sustainable designs to current green construction. The film is touring the world’s best architecture firms along with Editor-in-chief Susan S. Szenasy to commentorate Metropolis magazine’s 25th Anniversary. Recently completed is the fiction short FREEDOM ISN’T FREE, about the Iraq war and featuring Alexandria Wailes (Law and Order, Mother Courage with Meryl Streep).Kohn’s second feature documentary, currently production, FIVE DAYS AT TONIC uses the final days of the experimental haven as a window into the history of avant-garde music on the Lower East Side. Featuring John Zorn, Hal Wilner, Miho Hitori, and Vernon Reid with more to come. Matt is currently in production on a documentary he directed in Sudan.
