At the time of the Great War, 1914-18, Ireland was still part of the British Empire and therefore Irish troops enlisted in nominally British regiments, although many joined up in the fight for Home Rule for Ireland. By the time the war was over, Irish troops returned to a country in the throes of a bitter struggle for independence. There wartime exploits were looked on either with disdain or with outright hostility, due to the growing nationalist sentiments brought about by the struggle for independence. In Kilkenny, where I live, we are collating family histories of some of those who fought with the co-operation of their descendents. We have a touring exhibition of still images and will be posting the photographs online and making short documentaries to put a human face on dry statistics.
