John Schwally has been working on award-winning documentary programs his entire professional career. He recently completed work on A&E television’s hit series Steven Seagal: Lawman. He also Line Produced and Field Directed on 3 documentaries for National Geographic Channel’s Naked Science series. Prior to these assignments, he was Project Director for Whetstone Productions and the United States Agency for International Development. The USAID program helped train Jordanian filmmakers in the techniques of modern, western-style documentary production. The multi-part Science Channel series RoboCars again saw Schwally Line Producing and Field Directing as the production team covered DARPA’s Urban Challenge. History Channel’s Battles B.C. series tapped Mr. Schwally’s talents as writer for the episode David: Giant Slayer, which aired to critical acclaim. He was also the Coordinating Producer on the independent feature documentary Monks & Muslims: Finding Faith in Algeria. Schwally provided editorial, logistical and budgeting services to The Independent Production Fund’s feature documentary The Mystery of Love, and similarly performed on IPF’s The Islam Project, a co-venture providing over 4 hours of national programming for ABC News’ Nightline program and a PBS Frontline special (Muslims). He was brought in as consulting producer for the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum’s latest HD film The Story of Intrepid.
Among other works, John Schwally was Executive Producer on the outdoor-adventure program The Backpacking Experience (Outdoor Life Network/OLN/versus). He spent nearly two years as New York Bureau Chief for the national PBS series Religion & Ethics NewsWeekly before taking on the role of Executive Producer for Cablevision’s American Catholic Network. John also performed the dual roles of Field Producer and Production Manager on the Discovery Health Channel documentary series
Beating the Odds. Further credits include work as Senior Production Manager on national PBS series Nature, Adam Smith (Emmy winner), Innovation (Emmy winner) and Line Producer on the annual live production of the DuPont-Columbia University Awards in Journalism. He earned a third Emmy Award for his work as Production Manager on the PBS special SHE SAYS: Women in News, and a CINE Golden Eagle Award for work performed on Muslims.
Mr. Schwally was instrumental in establishing the Producers Guild of America (PGA) East as founding Co-Chairman of the PGA East, and recently stepped down as co-chair of the PGA East Documentary Committee.
