Biography: Lou Kinard began her career 25 years ago as a traditional designer and illustrator—several years before Apple revolutionized the field of graphic design. Her initial reaction to the Macintosh computer was fear and loathing. However, she discovered quickly that she had a natural talent for technology and soon began teaching local ad agencies and design firms how to use their newly purchased Macs.
For several years, she had her own design and illustration business where she worked with local and national clients including First Union, Bank of America, Opera Carolina, and the Charlotte Observer.
In 1998, Lou became creative director for Pinkerton Services Group, where she managed an 11-person staff of writers and designers that specialized in employee communications. Lou created in-house campaigns for national clients such as Tiffany & Co., Saks Fifth Avenue, The Limited, Home Shopping Network, Pep Boys, and Office Depot.
After 18 years in print design, Lou decided to teach herself web and interactive design. In 2001, she was hired by Interactive Knowledge, a company that creates rich-media web sites for cultural institutions and non-profit companies such as The Smithsonian, PBS, The Whitney Museum and The Girl Scouts.
Her work has won numerous awards, including several Macromedia/Adobe “Site of the Day” selections, Communication Arts “Site of the Week” reviews, and “The Scout Report” listings, as well as a finalist in two SXSW competitions and a Webby Award. In 2006, Lou was profiled by Communication Arts online magazine and served as a judge for the Communication Arts Interactive Annual 12. In the Fall of 2008, Lou judged HOW Magazine's 2009 Interactive Design Competition and the 38th Annual University & College Designers Association.
