Biography: 

Emmy-award-winning director Mary Olive Smith has produced, directed, written and shot prime-time documentaries for major television broadcasters including Discovery Channel, National Geographic Channels, History Channel and PBS with a focus on character-driven science and adventure. Her work has taken her to more than 30 countries – from the Amazon to the Blue Nile gorge of Ethiopia – and featured her talent for intimate and in-depth storytelling. Her credits include documentaries highlighting women’s stories such “Child Brides” (winner of the Edward R. Murrow Award) and “Saving Haiti’s Mothers.” Mary Olive made her feature-length directorial debut with “A Walk to Beautiful.” Winner of the IDA’s award for Best Feature Documentary and numerous festival awards, the film also won an Emmy for broadcast on NOVA. Most recently Mary Olive was coordinating producer for Discovery’s “Dual Survival” (Original Media), and was the Director and Director of Photography for the feature version of “Fixing the Future” ("Now on PBS") – a journey across America looking for ways to bring jobs back to Main Street. She is currently in production on “Cheer,” her independent feature documentary about a special needs cheerleading team from Lyndhurst, NJ.
