
Randy Martin has worked as producer, writer, director, film/video editor or performer for the past 36 years. His work has spanned a broad range within the entertainment and media industries: from award-winning documentaries to name-brand comedy; network newsmagazines to TV business news; Broadway performances to Broadway playwriting; innovative TV interview shows to gritty reality shows; new media to web-casting.
At Bloomberg Television in New York City, Randy was a producer of investigative reports and specials for the network's prime time schedule as well as daily features and news segments. In January of 2008, Bloomberg aired his controversial half-hour documentary shot in Brazil, "Deadly Brew: The Human Toll of Ethanol." The documentary reveals the abuse and near slave-like conditions endured by the sugar cane cutters who work in that country's ethanol industry. The investigative special is Bloomberg Television's highest-rated program, and earned Randy the 2008 Emmy Award for Business & Finance: Outstanding Documentary on a Business Topic; the Detroit Press Club Foundation's 2008 International Wheel Award: Best News Programming/Documentary; and was the television finalist for this year's New York Press Club Golden Keyboard Award, presented to the year's top piece of investigative journalism.
Randy spent 2006 as the Series Producer of “Engineering an Empire,” the critically acclaimed 14-hour series for The History Channel which won two Primetime Emmy Awards for its debut special, “Rome: Engineering an Empire.” Production of the high-definition prime time series spanned five continents and nearly twenty countries, featured high-end 3D animation, and was hosted by "Robocop" star-turned-historian Peter Weller.
For freelance work, Randy is founder and Executive Producer of BeezerSprocket, an innovative media production company based in New York. The company has projects ranging from web-casts to documentaries for clients including School Library Journal.com and the Nuyorican Poet’s Cafe.
Randy is the former Producer of Streaming Media for the international publishing company Reed Business Information, where he created and produced the Television Group’s streaming video programs on the Variety.com and Multichannel.com websites. He designed and built studio and editing facilities in the New York Variety offices and directed newsroom programs from Variety's L.A. headquarters
Prior to joining Reed, Randy spent 10 years as a Senior Producer and Producer at CBS News in New York, where he was part of the founding team at CBS News Productions and Eye Too Productions, CBS network units which deliver hundreds of hours of prime time programming each year to the major cable and broadcast networks. During his career at CBS Randy spent two years as a producer for the network's newsmagazine “48 Hours” and was part of the production team which launched CBS’s cable network, CBS Eye On People, where he was Senior Producer of the weekly series "Signature" hosted by Charles Osgood. Randy also appeared as the show’s sole “anonymous” interviewer. He served as Senior Producer for the Food Network series “Legendary Hangouts” hosted by Morley Safer, which earned a James Beard Foundation Nomination: Best National Food Journalism.
In the early 1990s, Randy was Supervising Producer at Millennial Entertainment in New York City, where he was among the first producers, writers and directors on the A&E series “Biography.” His work on the series at Millennial and later at CBS – 28 episodes in all -- earned him a Prime Time Emmy Award nomination, National News and Documentary Emmy nomination and CableACE nomination for Best Informational Series.
Randy has produced, directed, written and/or supervised the production of more than 80 documentaries and reality-based programs for CBS, the Discovery Channel, TLC, A&E, The History Channel, Food Network, Bloomberg TV and other major networks. A few highlights of his work include “Horrors of Hussein” and “Sons of Saddam” for The History Channel - the network’s two highest-rated programs of 2003 - which won the Telly and CINE Golden Eagle awards; TLC’s “9/11: The President’s Story,” reported by "60 Minutes" correspondent Scott Pelley; “Summer of Terror: The Son of Sam Story” and “The Enforcers: Inside the DEA” for the Discovery Channel; three specials on Michael Jackson, the Green River Killer and the BTK Killer for A&E’s “Investigative Reports” with Bill Curtis and two episodes of “Dead Reckoning,” a high-tech documentary series about real life forensic science for The History Channel.
Randy was a partner in Martin/Thurman Productions, a motion picture company based in Los Angeles, and was co-creator, head writer and Executive Producer of the radio comedy show “On the Air,” hosted by Firesign Theater’s Phil Proctor and recorded at L.A.’s Comedy Store Playhouse.
Randy began his career as a musician and classically trained actor/singer. Beginning in 1973, he appeared on Broadway and across America as an actor and singer in such shows as "Jesus Christ Superstar," "Godspell," "Miss Moffat" with Bette Davis and "Mame" with Angela Lansbury. He performed on Broadway with stars including Jimmy Stewart, Henry Fonda and Ethel Merman.
Randy co-wrote the book and lyrics for the Broadway musical “Festival” - a Grammy Award finalist for Best Broadway Cast Album; produced for the Los Angeles Shakespeare Festival; and produced & directed non-profit and commercial theater in New York City, where he was a founding member of The Producers Group.
Along the way, Randy made ends meet working at jobs including airborne traffic reporter for several Los Angeles radio stations (surviving a rush-hour crash of his airplane into a college tennis court), cater-waiter, bartender, furniture deliveryman, truck driver, messenger, preschool teacher, computer teacher and house sitter.
Randy lives in Manhattan with his wife, actress Becky London, and their 9 year-old son, Ben.
