Timothy Grey has a visual and musical style all his own.
“I look toward stories that question odd behavior-- those that lie beyond the realm of conventional acceptability and social contract and that seek to redefine the status quo, or simply destroy it.”
Born and raised near Flint, Michigan, home of fellow filmmaker and Academy Award-winning director Michael Moore, Grey entered the independent film scene with his first feature film VOW described by Moore as “both disturbing and entertaining. A wonderful contribution to independent film.”
An accomplished musician/composer since the age of 13, Grey is known for his highly stylized visuals and an aggressive lyricism that drive home his rare brand of storytelling across all genres.
His most personal project to date, the critically acclaimed documentary UNDER THE EIGHTBALL, chronicles his sister’s battle with Lyme disease. The emotionally raw film exposes the connection between the United State’s bio warfare programs and the illness that eventually claimed his sister’s life.
When the film opened to a limited theatrical release in December 2009, the reaction from the film industry was unanimous. "Angry passion and visual energy define this extraordinary muckraking documentary," said the Village Voice. "Brisk, utterly compelling, Under the Eightball is a documentary, as provocative and disturbing as imaginable, that plays like a top-notch biological thriller," claimed the Los Angeles Times. "A figurative slap in the face to corrupt factions of the medical establishment," wrote Variety. And from The New York Times, “the film envelopes us in a visually compelling cocoon.”
Grey has directed music and tour videos for several indie folk/rock artists including The Accidentals, Blake Elliot, The Academy Four and Rachel Brooke’s chart climbing song A KILLER’S DREAM featured on CMT. As reviewed, “The 50's-sheek (sic) film noir video for the song only magnifies the juxtaposition disquiet as Brooke's toothy siren's smile beckons one into her twisted world.”
Under his production company Andalusian Dogs, Grey is currently shooting GET LOUD! STAY LOUD! (demanded by audiences) the follow-up to UNDER THE EIGHTBALL which chronicles the next steps in his journey to exact change in the medical, political and social landscape and the laws regulating the diagnostics and treatment of Lyme disease.
LONG LIVE THE BASTARDS! - A first person, graphical-perspective look into the world of online gaming through the eyes of an actual gamer.
DISINTEGRATION, a documentary thriller investigating the belief that US race riots of the late 1960's were orchestrated by international oil in an attempt to create a new consumer class.
Today, Grey remains a leading activist and advocate for Lyme disease patients and is frequently invited to speak at the national level on behalf of legislative reform.
His passionate humanitarian nature also led him to help found Hate-Free Traverse City and Unity Fest, which became a national model for community activism against hate crimes and was featured on BBC, Imus, CNN, ABC, CBS NBC and FOX News. His continued love for Traverse City and filmmaking led to the first annual Traverse City Film Festival, where he headed up the renovations of the historic State Theater.
Timothy currently resides in Traverse City MI with his daughter Zoe. They will be relocating in August of 2013 to Los Angeles.
