Biography: Thomas White is editor of Documentary magazine, the quarterly publication of the International Documentary Association (IDA), as well as content editor of the IDA’s website, www.documentary.org, which includes the online monthly Documentary e-zine. Documentary was recently honored with a Western Publications Association Maggie Award nomination for best publication in the Communication, Advertising and The Arts/Trade category. White has been affiliated with the magazine since 1996, when he was named assistant editor; he was appointed editor in June 2000. In addition to his articles in Documentary, his work has appeared in Point of View, The Independent Film & Video Monthly, The Hollywood Reporter, Variety International Film Guide, indieWIRE and Release Print (now Film Arts). White has served on the juries of the Internaitonal Documentary Filmfestival Amsterdam (IDFA), International Documentary Challenge, the HBO Comedy Film Festival, the Denver International Film Festival and the AFI Film Fest, and on panels at the Dallas International Film Festival, NATPE Producer’s Boot Camp, the National Association of Latino Independent Producers (NALIP) conference and the Seattle International Film Festival. He was a Delegate to the 2004 and 2005 editions of the Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Film Festival, and he has moderated numerous panels and discussion sessions at various IDA programs. He is also currently affiliated with the American Documentary Showcase, a cultural diplomacy project under the auspices of the US State Department, as a Delegate Expert and as an editor and writer of the study guide materials for the Showcase. He has also worked with Vulcan Productions as a research consultant, and with independent documentary filmmakers as a resource development consultant and grant proposal writer. White received his MBA from The Anderson Graduate School of Management at UCLA in 1989, and he graduated from Yale University in 1982 with a BA in English.
