Sixteen year old Sala volunteered to go to a Nazi labor camp in place of her older sister. Surviving five years of imprisonment, she kept secret a diary and more than 350 letters she received while enslaved. Fifty years later, facing open-heart surgery, she gave her cache to her daughter, reigniting the voices of those she lost.

SALA details one woman’s story of survival amidst the 20th century’s most infamous crime. Yet the voices in the letters Sala Kirschner saved speak to universal themes of resilience, resistance, and the power of personal connection to sustain life in the face of trauma and oppression.
