Simon Kilmurry is the executive director of the International Documentary Association (IDA). He joined IDA in July 2015 and oversees all IDA programs and operations, including filmmaker services, funding, educational programs, the IDA Awards, and advocacy for the field. In 2017 he launched IDA’s Enterprise Documentary Fund, a $1 million annual granting fund supporting creative documentary and journalism, and which also provides funded projects with a range of legal support and research services.
He oversees IDA’s biennial Getting Real conference, a three-day event that is attended by over 1,000 nonfiction filmmakers, financiers and industry experts.
He serves on the board of jurors of the George Foster Peabody Awards and on the board of screeners of the DuPont Columbia Awards. He is a member of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, the Producers Guild of America, and the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. He serves as an advisor to The Redford Center and Firelight Media.
Prior to joining IDA he served as the executive producer of POV, the long-running PBS showcase of independent documentaries where he received one Prime Time Emmy, three Prime Time Emmy nominations, 17 News and Documentary Emmy Awards, more than 60 News & Documentary Emmy nominations, six George Foster Peabody Awards, four DuPont Columbia Awards and two International Documentary Association Best Curated Series Awards.
He regularly serves on juries and as a presenter at film festivals around the world, including Sundance, IDFA, Shanghai and Zurich Film Festivals amongst many others.
