The Memory of Food

  • Nadege Lepoittevin, Director/Producer

A small stone village with terracotta tile roofs and a tall bell tower clusters on a hillside, surrounded by dense green forest. Layered mountain ridges rise in the background under a pale sky, with a few clouds caught against the slopes. Patches of cultivated grass and low stone walls separate the village from the surrounding woodland. Dark green shrubs and trees fill the foreground.

About the Project

In the chestnut forests of Castagniccia, in the mountainous interior of Corsica, a handful of elders still hold the knowledge that once fed an entire mountain civilisation: how to read a harvest, tend a séchoir, and prepare the dishes that marked every season of community life. The Memory of Food: Castagniccia, Corsica follows their hands and their stories before this knowledge disappears. It is the pilot film in a long-term documentary series preserving endangered culinary heritage around the world, one community at a time. Your support helps bring this record home.
