Yesterday, October 30, documentary filmmaker Giorgi Mrevlishvili was detained by authorities in Georgia. Giorgi and his wife were taking their child to a doctor when police officers removed him from his car. This news was reported in social media posts published by Documentary Association Georgia, one of IDA’s peer organizations. According to reports, Mrevlishvili has been detained under administrative charges for taking part in protests that block Rustaveli Avenue — an action that, under a new law, can result in several days of imprisonment. Soon after detention, he was sentenced to 7 days of imprisonment.

We demand Mrevlishvili’s immediate release.

Giorgi Mrevlishvili is the director of documentaries such as National Exams, 12 Lessons, and Zurabi, among others. Recently, he has been documenting the protests.
