'The Tale of Silyan' team. Winner at 41st IDA Documentary Awards

What are the changes in rules & regulations this year for IDA Documentary Awards 2026?

There are changes this year in the pricing structure, timeline, and categories.

Changes in Categories

We are thrilled to offer a new category that is open only to qualifying Feature Documentary films. The new category is:

Best Documentary Not in the English Language:  A feature-length documentary in which the spoken language, dialogue, and/or audio recordings are mostly and predominantly in a language or languages other than English. Films may also submit for consideration in the Best Feature Documentary category, the Best Music Documentary category (if applicable) and the Creative Recognition categories.

Changes in Pricing

This year we are introducing three major changes to our pricing structure. The changes are as follows:

  1. International pricing: Modeled after IDA's Doc Maker Membership pricing, the IDA Documentary Award’s pricing is designed to make our awards entries accessible no matter where you live.

In alignment with the United Nations’ recommended pricing models and informed by the World Bank’s Gross National Income indicators, we’ve created a sliding scale that helps reduce financial barriers and promote equitable participation.

Important: Your IDA Awards price point is determined by your current country of residence, not your country of origin. Please review the Location Group chart below to identify your country and the corresponding pricing before purchasing.

Our commitment is to ensure that documentary filmmaking remains accessible, equitable, and supportive for everyone, everywhere. This sliding-scale pricing is one way we’re working toward that goal.

Location Group Pricing Structure:

  • Location Group 1: Residents pay full-priced entry fee.
  • Location Group 2: Residents pay 40% less USD in entry fees.
  • Location Group 3: Residents pay 80% less USD in entry fees.

  1. Corporate pricing vs independent filmmaker pricing

The documentary landscape is difficult for independent filmmakers to navigate, especially when it comes to unexpected distribution, festival, and awards campaign costs. As a reflection of this, and to make our awards more accessible for independent filmmakers and producers everywhere, we are introducing two different pricing structures, one for individual filmmakers and one for corporate distributors. Companies in violation will be contacted to make up the fee difference.

  1. Flat membership discount

In an effort to bring increased clarity and simplicity to our pricing structure, we are eliminating member-specific prices. Instead, all members at the Doc Maker level and above will receive a flat 20% discount. Note: the 20% discount is incorporated into the rates for the Early Member-only Entry Period.

Changes in Timeline

We are extending the time for IDA members to apply to the IDA Documentary Awards. The Call for Entries opens to members on May 4th, and the general public on June 1st. The Final Entry Period closes to the general public on August 20th, but members will have the opportunity to apply at the same price point until September 1, 2026.

If you’re interested in applying early, or would like to apply later than August 20th, you can sign up for a member today following this link.

FAQ

My film is/will be completed in 2026, but I'm unsure about its release date. Can I submit to this year's awards?

If you believe the film will be released in 2026, yes. Projects may be submitted in any year they are eligible. The eligibility period begins September 1, 2025, and includes any film, series or documentary that premiered/is scheduled to premiere on or before December 31, 2026. However, if the project is announced in the shortlist announcement, it is no longer eligible for submission in subsequent years, so we advise to consider your submission carefully.

My film was completed in 2025 and was released or is set to be released in 2026. Can I submit to this year's awards?

Yes.

I submitted my film/series to the Awards in a previous year, but wasn’t nominated. Can I resubmit the same film/series?

Generally, no. There are some exceptions. The exceptions are:

  • You have significantly changed the project and you are submitting it to a different category.
  • You submitted your film to a Feature or Shorts category, but now it is part of a Best Curated Series entry.
  • You withdrew your project in the previous cycle before the shortlist announcement. (This requires clearance from the Awards team.)
Do you offer discounts or fee waivers for submissions?

Yes. We recognize the economic hardship that independent producers are experiencing and we can offer discounts or fee waivers on a case-by-case basis. To apply for a fee waiver, fill out this form by August 1, 2026 at 12 pm PDT. Waiver codes will not be eligible for use on late submissions. Requests will be reviewed by an advisory committee on a regular basis until the form closes on August 1, 2026. All requests will receive a response before the close of Call For Entries on August 20, 2026.

How do I submit my film if it is completed after the deadline?

Requests for deadline exceptions for eligible projects expected to be completed after August 20, 2026, are considered on a case-by-case basis. A late submission request should be made no later than August 20, 2026, via our late submission request form here. Please include the following information in the form: category, project title, synopsis, distributor, expected delivery date. A fee will be added to submissions accepted after August 20, 2026. Waiver codes will not be eligible for use on late submissions.

I submitted my project to the Awards, but I would like to withdraw from the competition. Is this possible?

Yes. Please contact awards@documentary.org immediately to withdraw your film from the competition. The submitter must contact awards@documentary.org to withdraw a project from competition prior to the official shortlist announcement in mid-October 2026. Projects that withdraw may be deferred to the following year’s competition at no additional fee. If the project is announced in the shortlist announcement, prior to withdrawal, it is no longer eligible for submission in subsequent years. There are no refunds for those who don’t defer their submission until next year.

What is the difference between Curated Series and Episodic Series?

Both are comprised of episodes that are not necessarily produced to be viewed in order. Curated Series episodes are usually created by different producing teams (e.g. Independent LensPOV), while Episodic Series are produced with a continuity of production supervision (e.g. Anthony Bourdain Parts Unknown).

What is the difference between Best Music Documentary Award and Best Music Score Award?

The Best Music Documentary Award recognizes a feature, short or multi-part documentary that has music as the central character of the film and/or a pivotal component of the storytelling (e.g. Amazing Grace, Apollo, Homecoming: A Film by Beyoncé). The Best Music Score Award recognizes special achievement in a feature documentary that contains an original score.

How are the winners of the IDA Documentary Awards chosen?

Judging of the IDA Documentary Awards is based on overall creative excellence. Fifteen committees of 200+ international filmmaking and industry professionals screen all 700+ entries and select all nominees. For the Best Feature and Best Short categories, the winners are selected by IDA Members from the pool of nominees. For all other awards, the winners are selected by panels of experts from around the world.

How can I apply to become a juror for the IDA Documentary Awards?

Will there be an awards ceremony this year?

Yes, the 42nd IDA Documentary Awards Ceremony will be held in early December at a venue in Los Angeles. Stay tuned for a date and venue announcement!
