A peaceful outdoor rally taking place on the steps of Los Angeles City Hall. In the foreground, two people are seen from behind, wearing black t-shirts that read "Justice for Yong Yang." Behind them, a diverse crowd of participants of various ages, some wearing hats and sunglasses, hold signs that read "Mental Health Lives Matter" and "Koreans United for Justice."

About the Project

After two decades living in Los Angeles with bipolar disorder, Yong Yang, a Korean-American patient, had finally built a life worth living - until an LAPD officer fatally shot him during a mental health crisis. “Courage for Yong” is a documentary that follows Yong’s identical twin brother and Korean immigrant parents as they refuse to grieve in silence, challenging the cultural stigma and institutional cover-up that allowed law enforcement to label their son a "suspect" rather than a patient. Together, they demand accountability in a system that too often responds to mental illness with lethal force.
