Behind the Scenes of Field Accountability and Possibility | Getting Real '20


Filmmakers and stakeholders tackling structural and values-related challenges in the documentary ecosystem report back to the field on their work. In the last several years, there has been a sharp increase in self-organizing to improve the conditions for makers, audiences, and represented communities. Hear from some of the people in the trenches on this work.

Ethics & Accountability Working group: The group will introduce a framework for values-based filmmaking and share examples of how filmmakers might put those values into practice. The vision for this group is, ultimately, the refinement and adoption of these principles throughout the nonfiction field. - Presenters: Natalie Bullock-Brown, Bhawin Suchak, Sonya Childress

Beyond Inclusion: Equity and Accountability in Docs: Taking a holistic approach to systems change within documentary from the education pipeline all the way up to the streaming giants. Developing actionable guidelines for necessary changes at each level of the ecosystem, in order to chart a BIPOC-led course towards true racial equity and accountability in a field that prides itself on these expressed values. - Presenters: Geeta Gandbhir, Jihan Robinson, Marjan Safinia

Distribution Advocates works to collectively reclaim power for independent storytelling creators in the current systems of distribution and exhibition. We are a coalition-in-formation striving to advocate for filmmakers and maintainplurality and originality in a culture that needs it more than ever. We fight for radical transparency, rebalancing entrenched inequities and blazing a new, more interesting, accessible and inclusive way forward. - Presenters: Carlos Gutiérrez, Amy Hobby, Sarah Kim
