The Grey Between: Screening of Island in Between + Colour Ideology Sampling.mov
-
Join us for a special Getting Real 2026 screening event featuring Taiwan Academy's two award-winning documentary shorts, Island in Between and Colour Ideology Sampling.mov.
About the Screening
Not every border is a line. Some are a color, a silence, an identity that refuses to settle.
This special screening brings together two award-winning documentary shorts that dwell in the space between, the grey that no map, no flag, and no color chart can fully account for. In Island in Between (2023), Oscar-nominated for Best Documentary Short at the 96th Academy Awards, director S. Leo Chiang weaves the geopolitical tension of Kinmen, a Taiwanese island just two miles from mainland China, with his own personal reckoning. Having grown up in the United States, Chiang reflects on a life shaped by Taiwan, China, and America, finding in this suspended island a mirror for his own ambivalent sense of belonging.
Colour Ideology Sampling.mov (2024), by directors Chan Cheuk-sze and Kathy Wong, finds that same unresolvedness in the political life of color itself. Winner of Best Documentary Short at the 61st Golden Horse Awards and the Jury Award at TIDF 2026, the film deconstructs how hues become ideology, tracing the symbolism of Hong Kong yellow and Taiwan green, and how identity always exceeds the shades we are handed.
Together, these films ask us to resist the comfort of clear edges. To stay in the grey. To look carefully at what lives in between.
