Documentary is pleased to debut the final trailer of Threshold and announce the film’s digital release on August 28. The documentary originally screened on Peacock during the 2026 Olympic Winter Games.
Threshold follows decorated cross-country skier Jessie Diggins as she competes at the highest level of the sport while battling an eating disorder. Diggins is a four-time Olympic medalist who won the United States’ first gold medal in cross-country skiing in 2018. The documentary follows the US team over the course of the 2023-24 season, as Diggins’ mental illness resurfaces, interrogating the toll of the control and precision demanded by the sport. The film reckons with the cost of competing mid-recovery to demonstrate the importance of mental health in athletics, challenging the notion that endurance alone is virtuous.
Threshold is the first feature directed by brothers Lars and Torsten Brinkema, who share experience ski racing and a home state of Minnesota with Diggins. The Brinkema brothers tell Diggins’ story in present-day vérité, with camera in hand and skis on their feet. The film’s team credits the trust Diggins placed in them, opening up about a relapse after filming began, with the story evolving into an intimate portrait of recovery. “This is the story my 18-year-old self desperately needed to hear,” Diggins noted in a prepared statement.
