About the Project

Love, Your Birth Mom is a documentary film that follows the journey of several pregnant women who are considering adoption. The film chronicles their pregnancies through the moment when they are faced with an impossible decision - whether to raise their child or place them into the arms of another family.

The #MeToo movement has brought about much needed reform around gender-based descrimination, and yet, women remain wholly saddled with the shame and the responsibility of an unplanned pregnancy. Women are villainized if they choose to terminate a pregnancy, shamed if they choose to place their child into adoption, and unsupported if they choose to parent their child. The recent proliferation of anti-abortion laws and the polarizing reaction to them illustrates the urgent need for this film. Love, Your Birth Mom will provide a window into the lived experience of adoption from the birth mom’s perspective and in doing so, ask some bigger questions. What does it mean to be a mother? What is our perception of and what do we expect from men involved in unplanned pregnancies, and why does it differ from our perceptions and expectations of women? What impact does class, race, and gender have on parenthood in America? And ultimately, what role do women play in our society?
