About the Project

Julie Magers' world turned upside down when her husband, Michael Mehaffie, was sentenced to twenty years for commercial burglary. In the state of Maryland commercial burglary carries the same weight as murder. Over the past five years of incarceration Julie began to be an advocate for Michael because he had entered jail with Multiple Sclerosis(MS) and received far below the appropriate care to manage the disease. After years of neglect leaves Michael permanently disabled, Julie’s experience begins to spark a movement to reform Maryland's correctional system. At risk inmates with health conditions begin to die from COVID-19 on Michael’s tier, thrusting Julie into a race against time to get a sentence modification for his early release before he contracts the disease.
