About the Project

Out From Under Us is a feature documentary about why members of the Acholi tribe in northern Uganda fear a genocidal campaign against them by President Museveni's regime. Acholi civilians were slaughtered by his victorious National Resistance Army, after Museveni seized power in 1986, following a bush war. This sparked three rebellions and 20 years of civil war. During the war 98% of the Acholi population were forced into internal displacement, or concentration, camps, where more died of malnutrition, disease and mistreatment than in the fighting. In 2006 Joseph Kony and the Lord's Resistance Army rebels agreed to leave Uganda. The Acholi peasant farmers returned to their land only to be told by government forces it was no longer their land. This film follows the land grabs from 2012 and battles to resist them and gives the background to why the Acholi fear that their government wants to destroy their society.
