A School Grows in Watts

Ryan S. Porush
Ryan S. Porush, Jack Polson
a grade school African American girl in a school uniform looks up at a white board with a paper in her hand in front of the rest of her young classmates.

In Watts, it takes an urban village to raise a school. Set against the backdrop of a politically and socially divided nation, A SCHOOL GROWS IN WATTS reflects on the dense, often tragic history of South Los Angeles and the systemic barriers facing children in inner cities like it. Weaving together the personal narratives of the students, teachers and families involved with the unconventional and overachieving charter school, Watts Learning Center, this documentary explores how an innovative, inclusive approach to education can allow even a tiny school to change the narrative for an entire community.
